Inaugural Professorial Lecture Series
The Faculty of Social Sciences, UWI, Mona continues to host its Inaugural Professorial Lecture Series in which Professor Patricia Anderson from the Department of Sociology Psychology and Social Work will present on the topic, “Jamaican Fathers: Between Culture and Economy.” This event takes place on Tuesday, December 5 at 6 pm in the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre (SSLT). Launch of Mervyn Morris’ Book-“I been there, sort of”- New and Selected Poems
The Department of Literatures in English presents the Launch of Mervyn Morris’ “I been there, sort of”- New and Selected Poems on December 3 at 11:00 a.m. at the Phillip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts. The event will feature book presentations to the National Library of Jamaica and the UWI, Main Library. There will also be dramatic presentations of select Mervyn Morris poems such as: “Short Story” by Kei Miller, “Proposition One” by Tanya Shirley and Karl Williams, “Operation” by Carolyn Allen and “Stripper by Michael Bucknor. Launch of Professor Hyacinth Evans’ Book-“Inside Hillview High School”
The UWI Press in collaboration with the Institute of Education, UWI, Mona will launch the book “Inside Hillview High School: an ethnography of an urban Jamaican school” by Professor Hyacinth Evans on Wednesday, December 6 at 5:30 p.m. in the Multifunctional Room of the Main Library, UWI, Mona. The guest speaker for the event will be Pro-Vice Chancellor and Principal, Professor Elsa Leo-Rhynie. The public is invited to this book launch.
Long Service Awards Dinner
The annual Long Service Awards Dinner will be held on Wednesday, December 13 at the Mona Visitor’s Lodge and Conference Centre at 5:00 p.m. This event is being held to honour academic, senior administrative and professional, and administrative technical service staff of the University of the West Indies who have served the institution for fifteen, twenty-one, thirty years and forty years.
Professor Rex Nettleford named to Commonwealth Commission
Professor Rex Nettleford, Vice Chancellor Emeritus at the University of the West Indies has been named a member of a high level Commonwealth group comprising ten members to be known as the Commonwealth Commission on Respect and Understanding. In this regard Professor Nettleford will be representing Jamaica and the wider Caribbean.
The Commission will be chaired by the Indian Nobel Laureate, Professor Amartya Sen. The other nine members are from the United Kingdom, Canada, Singapore, Bangladesh, Toga, Kenya, South Africa and Australia.
Rex Nettleford Fellowship in Cultural Studies, 2007
Applications are invited for the Rex Nettleford Fellowship in Cultural Studies for 2007. The Fellowship was established by the Rhodes Scholarships in the Caribbean in 2004 and in honour of the outstanding contribution of Professor the Honourable, Rex Nettleford O.M. to higher education and to cultural life in the Caribbean. The prize is awarded annually.
The Michael Manley Lecture
The Michael Manley Foundation hosts the Michael Manley Lecture 2006 at the LOJ Auditorium located at 28-48 Barbados Avenue, Kingston 5 on Sunday, December 10 at 4:30 p.m. The lecture will be given by Professor Manning Marable, Director of the Centre for Contemporary Black History, Columbia University. The topic of his lecture is: “Empire, Racism and Resistance: Prospects for a Democratic Future.”
UWI Press Wins Book Awards
Three UWI Press books won awards at the 9th Biennial Book Industry Association of Jamaica Book Awards ceremony recently. B.W. Higman’s Plantation Jamaica: Capital and Control in the Colonial Economy received the Best Academic Book Award, 2006. The judge’s citation read:
