Summer Institute on Business Information Services and Resources for SMEs

The Department of Library and Information Studies, UWI, Mona presents a Summer Institute on Business Information Services and Resources from June 27-July 1, 2011 at UWI, Mona. The Programme is designed to offer Caribbean librarians and business and information professionals a unique opportunity to gain new knowledge and skills to position themselves to support growth and development. It is especially geared towards small and medium size enterprises operators.
40th Annual Library Conference To Be Held at UWI, Mona

The 40th Annual Conference of the International Association of School Librarianship (IASL) will be held from August 7 to 11, 2011 at the UWI, Mona Campus. The Conference will be preceded on August 5, by a Joint Pre-Conference Satellite Meeting of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions, School Libraries and Resource Centers Section (IFLA SLRC) and the International Association of School Librarianship (IASL). Both events are being hosted in collaboration with the Library and Information Association of Jamaica (LIAJA). Pre-Conference Workshops are scheduled to be held on August 7. There will also be poster presentations and exhibitions during the Conference.
UWI, Mona Hosts Distinguished Lecture on Medicine, Stem Cell and Biotechnology

The University of the West Indies, Mona in collaboration with Bio-Tech Research and Development Institute and the University of Technology has organized a Distinguished Lecture themed, “Medicine, Stem Cell and Biotechnology”. The Lecture will be delivered by Professor Gary Loake, Professor of Genetics and Genomics at the University of Edinburgh, UK. The event is set to take place on Monday, June 20, 2011 at 5:30 pm at the Chemistry Lecture Theatre (Chem 5), UWI, Mona.
UAWU Representative Elected as Campus Council Member

Mr. Alvin Millwood, Chief Delegate and Chairman of University Allied Workers Union (UAWU) has been elected as the Administrative, Technical and Service Staff Representative on Campus Council for 2011/12.
UWI Joins in Celebrating Sickle Cell Awareness Day

The Sickle Cell Unit of the Tropical Metabolic Research Institute at UWI joins in celebrating June 19 as Sickle Cell Awareness Day. The Unit will host an Expo where exhibits will showcase information on Sickle Cell and free Sickle Cell screening/ blood testing for the first fifty (50) persons. The Expo takes place on Friday, June 17 at 9 am at the Sickle Cell Unit car park. Persons are also invited to tune in to the outside broadcast on NewsTalk 93 FM between 9 am and 12 noon.
On Sunday June 19 the Sickle Cell Unit and Support Club will host a Public Awareness event at Hope Gardens from 3-6 pm. There will be an educational display, a multimedia presentation and free sickle cell screening to the first fifty (50) persons.
UWI Graduate Receives Cash Prize for Participation in Tracer Survey

Kemar Baxter, a Computer Science graduate from Humanities and Education, was the lucky winner of a $50,000 cash prize for participating in the recently concluded UWI Tracer Survey.
Mr. Baxter was one of more than 900 first degree graduates who participated in a Tracer Survey conducted by the Office of Planning and Institutional Research (OPAIR) during the first quarter of 2011. The Survey targeted 2009 first degree graduates to assess their employment prospects and satisfaction with the education they received, while at the University of the West Indies.
Leonard Howell Rastafari Symposium

The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus in conjunction with the Leonard Howell Foundation, host a two day symposium on Leonard Howell, a principal founder of the Rastafari movement on the occasion of the anniversary of his 113th Earthday. The Symposium begins on Friday, June 17 at 7 pm at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre. Attorney at Law, Miguel Lorne will deliver the keynote address on this occasion.
Seminar at UWI Assesses Jamaica’s Economy

The World Bank and the Department of Economics at UWI, Mona host a dissemination seminar entitled, Jamaica: Country Economic Memorandum (CEM) “Unlocking Growth”. The seminar takes place on Friday, June 17, 2011 at 9:00am in the Multifunctional Room, Main Library, UWI, Mona.
The Hon. Portia Simpson Closes SALISES Prime Ministerial Reflections Fifty –Fifty Series

The Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES), UWI Mona, announces the continuation of the Prime Ministerial Reflections Fifty- Fifty. The final reflection in the series will be delivered by former Prime Minister the Most Honourable Portia Simpson-Miller on Wednesday, June 15 at 5:00 p.m. at The Jamaica Pegasus Hotel.
UWI Commemorates International Archives Day

The University Archives joins in commemorating International Archives Day on Thursday, June, 9, 2011 by hosting an Open day and Exhibition. The event takes place at 26 West Road (behind the Mona School of Business) starting at 9 am under the theme, "Art and Archives". International Archives Day is celebrated worldwide to bring to the fore the work of archival institutions and to increase awareness of the value of archival records. The day also marks the first anniversary of the fire which resulted in the relocation of the University Archives to its present location on a temporary basis.
