Growth Inducement Strategy Public Seminar

“Growth Inducement Strategy: A Critical Analysis” is the topic of the public seminar being organized by Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) in collaboration with the Department of Economics at UWI, Mona and the Private Sector Organization of Jamaica (PIOJ).   The seminar is scheduled to take place on Thursday, September 29 at 8:45 am at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre at UWI, Mona. On this occasion the PIOJ will officially present the recently published strategy for the growth of the Jamaican economy.
 

Public Lecture: ’Everybody Can Cross It’

“’Everybody Can Cross It’: Border Crossing and the Study of Foreign Languages” is the title of the public lecture being organized by the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at UWI, Mona. The Lecture takes place on Friday, September 23, 2011 at 11 am at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1). Professor Antonio Tillis, Chair, Department of African and African America Studies, dartmouth College, USA will deliver the Lecture.
 
The Lecture will explore broad issues related to border crossings – crossing disciplinary boundaries, crossing geographical boundaries, political spaces and how this can be facilitated through the study of Foreign Languages.

UWI, Mona Recognizes Outstanding Student Athletes

The University of the West Indies, Mona through the Sports Office hosts its annual Sports Awards Ceremony on Saturday, September 24, 2011 at 7 pm at the Rex Nettleford Hall Multi Purpose Room. The Awards Ceremony will recognize outstanding students for their commendable performance in the respective sports at the hall, intercollegiate, national and international level.  Her Excellency Dr. Iva Gloudon, High Commissioner of Trinidad and Tobago to Jamaica will be the guest speaker.

New Head of Surgery Appointed at UWI, Mona

Professor Newton D Duncan has been appointed Head of the Department of Surgery, Radiology, Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at the University of the West Indies, Mona effective August 1, 2011. This Department is the largest clinical department in the Faculty of Medical Sciences.
 
Professor Duncan is a graduate of Excelsior High School and did undergraduate and post-graduate training in surgery at the University of the West Indies, Mona. He received specialist training in paediatric surgery at Booth Hall and Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, University of Manchester, while on a Commonwealth Scholarship.
 

Barry Chevannes Memorial Service

There will be a Memorial Mass in memory of the late Professor the Honourable Barry Chevannes on Friday, August 5, 2011 at 5:30 pm at the Holy Trinity Cathedral located at 1 George Headley Drive, Kingston 4.

Tenth William Dennis Memorial Lecture

The Department of Surgery, Radiology, Anaesthesia and Intensive Care will host the 10th annual William Dennis Memorial on Thursday, July 21, 2011 at 5 pm at the Main Medical Lecture Theatre located on the University Hospital of the West Indies. The Lecture is held in recognition of the outstanding contribution made by the late William Dennis who was a senior paediatric surgeon that gave 25 years unstinting service to the Bustamante Hospital for Children. The Lecture will feature two addresses by Professor Archibald McDonald, Dean, Faculty of Medical Sciences, Mona and Professor Minerva Thame, Head of the Department of Child Health, UWI, Mona.
 

Parents and Family Orientation

The Office of Student Services and Development at UWI, Mona has organized a Parents and Family Orientation as part of the Orientation activities for first year students. The Parents and Family Orientation takes place on Sunday, July 24, 2011 at 8:30 a.m. in the Assembly Hall. 
 
This session will allow for parents, spouses and other family members to meet and engage members of the University community such as the Deans, Student Services and Development Managers and student leaders. There will also be campus tours and sessions designed to assist parents, spouses and other family members to adjust to the changes associated with this new phase. Additionally information on financial aid and options will be provided.
 

Chemistry Pulic Lecture

The Department of Chemistry at UWI, Mona hosts a lecture entitled, NanoGUMBOS: A New Breed of Nanomaterials on Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at 5 pm at Chemistry Lecture Room 5 (Chem 5), UWI, Mona. The Lecture will be delivered by Professor Isiah M. Warner, Vice Chancellor for Strategic Initiatives; Boyd Professor and Philip W. West Professor of Analytical and Environmental Chemistry and Howard Hughes Medical Institute Professor.

International Reggae Day Music Symposium Slated for UWI

The UWI, Mona Campus in collaboration with Jamaica Arts Holding (J.A.H.) will host a Reggae Music Symposium on Thursday, June 30, 2011 at 6:30 pm at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre, UWI, Mona. The Symposium is a precursor event in to mark International Reggae Day celebrated on July 1. The event dubbed “Saluting Reggae Vanguards” pays tribute to iconic Reggae artistes who have made noteworthy contributions to Reggae music namely: Burning Spear, Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, Sugar Minott and Bob Marley.
 

MGI Donates JAMNAV Unit to Red Cross

The Mona GeoInformatics Institute (MGI), a subsidiary of UWI, Mona will donate a JAMNAV GPS Navigation System to Jamaica Red Cross on Friday, June 24, 2011 at 10 am at the Red Cross National Headquarters located at Central Village, Spanish Town . The JAMNAV unit, the flagship GPS product of MGI, is expected to assist the Red Cross in carrying out its mandate especially in the areas of disaster response and preparedness and search and rescue.  The accuracy in providing directional guidance is expected to support the Red Cross in providing assistance to the most vulnerable in times of crisis especially during times of natural disasters such as hurricanes.
