UWI MSB Roundtable Addresses Organizational Renewal for Growth

 “Organizational Renewal: From Recession to Recovery and Growth” is the title of the Mona School of Business Roundtable scheduled for Thursday, June 16, 2011 at 10 am at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre. The event seeks to engage senior executives from the private and public sector in dialogue on organizational renewal and to provide practical solutions to the economic challenges being faced by some organizations. It is also designed to develop a repository of knowledge and answers on organizational renewal. 
 

UWI, EFJ and WRA Launch of Book on Jamaica Water Resources

Mona GeoInformatics Institute (MGI), in association with the Water Resources Authority of Jamaica (WRA) and the Environmental Foundation of Jamaica (EFJ) will launch the book, “Water Resources of Jamaica Fact Book”. The Launch takes place on Thursday, June 9, 2011 at 9 am at the Altamont Court Hotel.
 
The book provides details on Jamaica’s water supplies and resources and would be useful for students and teachers. The Fact Book covers several topics including the nature and distribution of water resources, water infrastructure, flooding, water supply and contamination.  The book launch takes part as part of a seminar for educators. During the Launch the EFJ will present several copies of the book to school representatives.

Science is Fun Field Trip

The Department of Physics at UWI, Mona hosts a Science is Fun Field Trip especially geared for grade six students from corporate area primary schools. The Field Trip takes place from Friday, May 27 to Thursday, June 2. Approximately four hundred (400) students are expected to participate in the Field Trip which will be staged in two hour sessions starting at 10 am and 12:30 pm daily during the period.

The students will have an opportunity to “taste and see that Science is fun” through interactive demonstrations, computer simulations and experiments.

This is a part of the Department’s outreach activities to engage students and stimulate an interest in science.  The Department also hosts field trips for fifth form Physics students and CAPE Workshops in Physics.

SALISES Holds Child’s Rights Workshop for Primary School Teachers

The Sir Arthur Lewis Institute for Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) at UWI, Mona will host a Child’s Rights Workshop for Primary Schools on Thursday, May 26, 2011 starting at 9 am at Seminar Room 10 (SR10), UWI, Mona. Over fifty (50) primary schools from across Jamaica are expected to participate in this Workshop which is expected to bring together over one hundred and eighty (180) teachers and students. The Workshop is designed to train teachers in child rights and research methodologies, promote research among primary school students and increase the adherence to child rights in schools.

Trade Unions to hold two-day Conference on the Future of the Movement

A two-day Conference set to establish a road map for trade unions to ensure its relevance and sustainability and to develop a process for identifying and developing the next generation of trade union leaders. It is organised by the Hugh Lawson Shearer Trade Union Education Institute in partnership with the Jamaica Confederation of Trade Unions, the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung and the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute for Social and Economic Studies' 50/50 project, as part of the movement's 'Workers' Week' celebrations.

The Mona School of Business and the Institute of Internal Auditors Host Corporate Governance Symposium

The Institute of Internal Auditors in partnership with the Mona School of Business (MSB) at UWI will host a symposium on the topic of “Corporate Governance”. The event takes place on Thursday, May 19, 2011 at 5 pm at the Executive Lecture Theatre of the Mona School of Business, UWI Mona.

UWI Symposium Examines the Tivoli Incursion One Year Later

“The Tivoli Incursion-1 Year Later” is the topic of the one day symposium being organized by the Institute of Gender and Development at UWI and the Jamaicans for Justice, Sistren Theatre Collective and the Jamaica Civil Society Coalition. The event takes place on Tuesday, May 31, 2011 at 4 pm at the 18th floor, Wyndham Hotel Ballroom.

Helen Tiffin to Deliver Fourth Edward Baugh Distinguished Lecture

Professor Helen Tiffin will deliver the fourth Edward Baugh Distinguished Lecture on Sunday, June 5 in the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1) at 11:00 am. She will speak on the topic "Small Islands, Strong Currents: The Significance of West Indian Literature". Now retired, Dr. Tiffin has been Professor of English at the University of Tasmania and the University of Queensland in Australia, and was also Professor of English at Queen’s University in Canada, where she held a Canada Research Chair.  Professor Tiffin is recognized as one of the leading scholars in the world in the area of postcolonial studies.

Reception in Honour of the Haitian Students

The Mona Campus as part of The University of the West Indies (UWI) / Haiti Initiative has been playing a significant role in the rebuilding of Higher Education in Haiti. Currently, some twenty-five students of the State University of Haiti are completing the final year of their degree programme at the Mona Campus. The students were granted full scholarships for one year of study after a rigorous process of selection. They took classes in the Faculties of Social Sciences, Pure and Applied Sciences and Humanities and Education.  The Haitian students have completed course work already begun in Haiti but interrupted by the devastating earthquake.  The students will be returning to Haiti shortly where they will be awarded a degree from the State University of Haiti.

UWI, Mona Hosts Basic School Champs

The University of the West Indies’ Township Project will be hosting the first University Township Basic School Champs on Thursday May 12, 2011 starting at 9 am at the UWI Bowl. The event is a part of the University’s effort to build positive community relationships, and to play a leading role in the development of early childhood institutions of excellence in the Greater August Town Community.   UWI, Mona seeks to help in furthering the social, educational, physical and emotional development of the children who attend the schools, through a diverse range of activities and initiatives.
