First Cohort of Distance Bachelor of Education Programme Graduates
The University of the West Indies, Mona, recently conferred Bachelor of Education degrees on 62 secondary school teachers who are the pioneers of a pilot programme which was launched by UWI and MOEY in January 2003. The programme was delivered using a mix of summer face to face and two semesters of online delivery. Fourteen graduates of this pioneering cohort received first class honours.
Geosciences for Development Week
The Geological Society of Jamaica (GSJ), in celebrating its Geosciences For Development Week 2006, November 26 – December 3, will mount an exhibition under the theme "Jamaica’s Energy Sources" on November 28 and 29 at the Old Dramatic Theatre, University of the West Indies, Mona Campus. There will be an Opening Ceremony at 9: 30 am where the Governor General, His Excellency the Most Honourable Professor Kenneth Hall will declare the exhibition open. Dr. Cezley Sampson, consultant on energy and public sector reform in the Cabinet Office, will be the guest speaker for this Ceremony.
Inaugural Professorial Lecture
The Faculty of Social Sciences, UWI, Mona hosts its inaugural Professorial Lecture in which Professor Brian Meeks from the Department of Government will present on the topic “Imagining the Future: Rethinking the Political in Jamaica.” This event takes place on November 28 at 6 pm at the Undercroft, The University of the West Indies, Mona. An invitation is extended to the public to participate in this lecture.
New Senior Appointments at UWI
A major changing of the guard is anticipated next year at The University of the West Indies when no less than four senior managers will proceed on retirement, necessitating the appointment of suitable persons to replace them. The University Council, meeting in Extraordinary session on Thursday, November 9 at the Mona Campus, agreed on replacements for three of the four positions: Principal of the Mona Campus, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Undergraduate Studies, and Pro Vice-Chancellor for the Outreach Sector. The fourth position – that of University Registrar – is still to be decided.
UWI Lecturer Presents at First Fulbright-Humphrey Alumni Speaker Series
The Jamaica Fulbright-Humphrey Alumni Association (JFHAA), in collaboration with the United States Embassy’s Office of Public Affairs, will host Dr. Dalip Ragoobirsingh as the guest speaker for the seminar “Diabetes & Folklore,” the first in the Fulbright-Humphrey Alumni Speaker Series. The event takes place at the Physiology Lecture Theatre, Basic Medical Sciences, University of the West Indies, Mona on Tuesday, November 21 at 5:30 p.m.. The Diabetes Association of Jamaica (DAJ) will also provide free diabetes, eye and blood pressure screening on site from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
World’s First Multimedia CD Compilation of Caribbean Ascidians
The Mona Institute of Applied Sciences launches the world’s first multimedia CD on the compilation of Caribbean Ascidians entitled “Caribbean Sea Squirts: The Goodbody Collection” This compilation is authored by the distinguished biologist, Ivan Goodbody. The achievement and recognition of Professor Goodbody’s dedicated service to the University of the West Indies (UWI) will be celebrated on Monday, November 20 at 5:30 p.m. in the Gold Room at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge, UWI, Mona.
“Mary Seacole: Her Contribution and Legacies”
The Mary Seacole Hall will hold a Lecture on Tuesday, November 21 at 5 pm at the Senate Building of the Undercroft, UWI, Mona under the theme “Mary Seacole: Her Contribution and Legacies.” Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Education and Lecturer in the Department of History & Archaeology, Professor Patrick Bryan, will make this address. All are invited to attend.
All Island Football Championships Begin
With the Divisional Winners of the Inter-Collegiate Football now realized, all eyes are now focused on the institution that will be crowned as the All Island Champions.
In the Division One, G.C.Foster College successfully retain their trophy without conceding a defeat and still has a chance of advancing from the semifinals when they go up against University of the West Indies who made it to the playoff as the best second placed team.
Annual Dance Faculty Concert - Physical Labrish!
The annual Dance Faculty concert at the School of Dance, Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts presents Physical Labrish!, from November 17 to 19 at the School of Dance Studio Theatre, 5 Arthur Wint Drive, Kingston 5.
This year, the Labrish is all about Thinking Allowed… a celebration of the fact that dance is a MIND-BODY-SPIRIT activity and requires conceptual thinking. Furthermore, dance can be seen as thought made visible and so it is "thinking aloud".
Annual World of Work Seminars
The Office of Placement and Career Services continues its presentations on career development through the Annual World of Work Seminars. The topic being featured this Thursday, November 16 is “Financing your Business- Materializing Your Ideas.” Micah Davis, General Manager of the UWI (Mona) and Community Cooperative Credit Union Limited will make the presentation in Seminar Room 10 (SR10) at 3:00 p.m. The last of these seminars takes place next week where the topic Wealth Management: Ensuring Financial Success will be presented.
