CARIMAC Students host Public Relations Expo
The Annual Public Relations Expo will be staged on Thursday, November 16 at the Undercroft of The University of the West Indies between 9 am and 2 pm under the theme “PR: Paving the Way Forward.” This event is a product of the Advanced Public Relations students of the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC).
CTLPA General Meeting
The Caribbean Tertiary Level Personnel Association (CTLPA) will have its general meeting on November 16 at 3 pm in the UWI Main Library Multifunctional Room.
The guest speaker for the event will be Vivian Crawford, Executive Director, Institute of Jamaica. The President of CTLPA, Mrs. Jacqueline Austin and the new Executive will be introduced as well as plans for the year discussed. All members of CTLPA and Student Services personnel in tertiary institutions are invited to attend.
Intercollegiate Competition-Round 4
At the end of Round 4 of the Intercollegiate Football and Netball Competitions, UWI and GC Foster remain unbeaten in Division 1 (D1) football, while GC Foster leads D1 Netball and University of Technology and UWI are tied in 2nd place. This “final” in effect is likely to be played on Tuesday November 14 at the GC Foster College.

Jamaican Historical Society Visit
The Jamaican Historical Society will be hosting a field trip to western St. Thomas on Sunday, November 19, 2006. Places of interest to be visited include Stony Gut, Judgment Cliff, Albion Estate ruins and the Easington Bridge. The cost of the trip is $1,000.00. The bus will depart from Richmond Park House at 8:00 a.m. and payment is required in advance. Individuals will need to take their own lunch and reminded to wear comfortable walking shoes.
LAAC Film Showing Continues
The Latin American- Caribbean Centre (LACC) has organized the showing of an Argentine film entitled “Iluminados por el fuego” (“Enlightened by Fire”) directed by Tristán Bauer. The film showing will take place on Wednesday, November 15 at 7.00 pm in the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1), Faculty of Humanities and Education of The University of the West Indies, Mona. The film is 100 minutes, with English subtitles. Admission is free. All are invited.
Let’s Talk Garifuna
The Belize Students’ Association (BSAJ) and Vincentian Students’ Association (VINSA) in collaboration with the Department of Language, Linguistics and Philosophy, and the Institute of Caribbean Studies will host a presentation on Saturday, November 18, at the Undercroft of the Senate Building at 4:00 p.m. examining the journey of Garifuna (Caribs) from exile in St. Vincent to Belize. This presentation is entitled 'LET’S TALK GARIFUNA: Our Story, not HIStory'.
The main presenter will be Dr. Velma Pollard, former UWI lecturer.
Peer Support Providers Needed
The University Counselling Services is currently recruiting students at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level to be trained as Peer Support Providers (formerly known as the Peer Counsellors).
Peer Support Providers are students who after receiving training in basic helping skills and are expected to make themselves available to other students to assist them with social, educational or personal concerns. They also assist in promoting good mental health on the campus by doing presentations on topics to do with wellness and coping with campus life.
Tribute to Professor Dennis Craig
The School of Education, in conjunction with Ian Randle Publishers will have a tribute to Professor Dennis Craig on Thursday, November 30 at 5:00 p.m. in the Multi-Functional Room of the Main Library. This event will mark the occasion of the reprint of his final work, Teaching Language and Literature, initially published in 1999.
The tribute will take the form of a seminar on language education, discussing the reprinted text as well as some of his other well-known and seminal ideas that have influenced language teaching practice in the Caribbean.
University Players to Re-stage “After Mrs. Rochester”
The University Players’ widely acclaimed production of Polly Teale’s play After Mrs. Rochester will be re-staged for an additional four performances only, Thursday, November 16 through Sunday November 19, by special arrangement with Nick Hern Books Ltd., UK. The production, directed by UWI Staff Tutor in Drama, Brian Heap, played to highly enthusiastic, capacity audiences in October when it was first staged at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts, UWI, Mona.
World Music Film Series Launched
The Institute of Caribbean Studies launches the World Music Film Series: Music is the Weapon, on Thursday, November 16, in the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre (SSLT) at 2 pm. The launch will feature the film 'Music is the Weapon - A Documentary on Fela Anikulapo Kuti.' The public is invited to attend and admission is free.
