Study Skills Workshops

The Counselling Service Unit of the University Health Centre is offering a six part series workshop on Study Skills aimed at improving students’ academic performance and assisting them in better coping with the various pressures of campus life. These sessions take place on Thursdays in the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1) in the Faculty of Humanities and Education at 2 pm. The first of the six part series commences on September 14, 2006 and will continue until October 19, 2006. This week’s topic is “Assessing your Learning Styles.”

The 2006-7 UWI Venture Competition Opens

The 2006-7 UWI Venture Competition (UWIVC) is now open to student teams of The University of the West Indies. Entry in the UWIVC is a tremendous opportunity for these teams to participate in the premier business plan competition in the region. It would help them to capitalize on entrepreneurial opportunities, obtain a place in the Vincent HoSang (Entrepreneurship) Programme with a chance of making a dream into a reality by implementing the business plan.

Thirty-One Win Prestigious UWI Open Scholarship

The University of the West Indies has awarded its prestigious Open Scholarships to thirty-one students from throughout the region who will commence studies at one of the three campuses in the 2006/2007 academic year. The awards have been given based on performance at the UWI Open Scholarship Examinations in March this year.

UWI Press Great Book Sale

The University of the West Indies Press will host a Great Book Sale from September 25 – 27 at the Assembly Hall, UWI Mona from 10.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m.

UWI Students Awarded Fellowships to Participate in ITU Youth Forum

Two students from The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, Samuel Morgan and Zelia Budhan, are recipients of fellowships to participate in the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Youth Forum which will be held in the framework of the 10th ITU TELECOMWORLD Exhibition and Forum in Hong Kong from December 4-8, 2006.

Advanced Research Skills Training Workshop

The Epidemiology Research Unit of the Tropical Medicine Research Institute, UWI in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Jamaica and the Caribbean Health Research Council, Trinidad and Tobago will host an Advanced Research Skills Training Workshop from September 19-21, 2006. The venue will be the computer laboratory at the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social & Economic Studies, UWI Mona.

Mammography Open Day

The X-Ray Department, University Hospital of the West Indies will host Mammography Open Day on Monday, October 23 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This is in keeping with Breast Cancer awareness month. It involves a day of activities including introductory talks on breast cancer as well as tours of the mammography unit. It is an informal event and we encourage you to ask questions about your various concerns. Other talks include: The Importance of Nutrition, Bone Health and Prevention of Osteoporosis and Breast Reconstruction after Mastectomy. Refreshments will be provided.

Matriculation and Welcome Ceremony

The UWI Mona’s Annual Matriculation and Welcome Ceremony for all new students will be held on Thursday, September 7 at 4:00 p.m. in the Assembly Hall. Students are required to assemble on the lawn facing the Undercroft by 2:15 p.m. for the signing of the Matriculation Register at 2:30 p.m.

Placement and Career Services

The Office of Placement and Career Services wishes to remind all departments on campus that their yearly part-time employment programme begins with the new academic year. Departments are asked to submit part-time vacancies, whether for short or long term projects by email at placemnt@uwimona.edu.jm or in person between the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Monday to Friday.
