The UWI School of Nursing, Mona (UWISON)

The UWI School of Nursing, Mona is celebrating 40 years of dedicated service to the development of nursing education and research for nurses in the Caribbean. In celebration of this milestone achievement, a Thanksgiving Service will be held on October 8, 2006 at the UWI Mona Chapel. We invite all to share in this occasion and extend a special invitation to the Alumni of the School (formerly the Department of Advanced Nursing Education).

The UWI Young Economist Association invited to join the NCST

The UWI Young Economists Association (YEA) has been invited by the Prime Minister of Jamaica, the Most Honourable Portia Simpson Miller to become a member of the National Council on Science and Technology (NCST) based on their successes and contribution to the Jamaican society.

UWI Establishes Course Offerings Database

The University of the West Indies has recently established a searchable database for its over eight hundred (800) courses of study available at its three campuses or via its distance learning programme. Interested persons may visit http://www.uwi.edu/students/programmes.aspx where they can easily explore UWI’s comprehensive programme database according to programme name or partial name, campus, level of study or mode of delivery.

World of Business Seminar

The Office of Placement and Career Services at the University of the West Indies will be hosts to the Jamaica Employers’ Federation (JEF) as they present a World of Business Seminar. This will take place at Seminar Room 10 (SR10), Faculty of Social Sciences on Thursday, September 21 at 2:00 p.m. The presenter will include Ms. Hopelyn Hinds, Senior Manager, Bank of Nova Scotia Jamaica Limited.
The University community is invited to participate in this seminar.

“That Time in Foreign” Lecture Series Continues

The Institute of Caribbean Studies at the University of the West Indies, Mona, continues its lecture series, “That Time In Foreign - Life Stories of Jamaican ‘England Returnees’. There will be a presentation on by A-dZIKO SIMBA entitled, “Emerging Black From Grey”. This takes place on Friday September 15, 2006 at 5:00 p.m. in the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1), UWI, Mona.

First Year Experience Programme Begins September 14

The First Year Experience Programme presents its first Open Session on Thursday September 14 from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. in the Assembly Hall. The guest speaker will be Mrs. Suzanne Francis-Brown, Author of “Mona Past and Present”. She will speak on The History and Heritage of the Mona Campus.

Caribbean Child Development Centre (CCDC) Resource Centre Introduces its Spanish

The Caribbean Child Development Centre (CCDC) Resource Centre introduces its Spanish Collection. The items available in this collection pertain to Child Rights and other issues relating to children and families in Latin America and the Caribbean. Interested individuals may contact Kisha Sawyer at kisha.sawyers@uwimona.edu.jm to view the titles on this topic.

Energy Conservation Exhibition Mounted

The Energy Conservation Project for the Mona Campus (ECP) has mounted two displays at the Science Library and in the Main Library. These exhibitions serve to inform the University community of the very important role the ECP plays in helping the University to become an environmentally smart campus. In addition, these displays seek to inform the University population about the present and upcoming plans of the ECP which will assist UWI in conserving energy. They run from September 4 -8, 2006.

Literacy Skills Workshop

The UWI Mona Library, through its Mona Information Literacy Unit (MILU), held a 5-day summer workshop on information literacy skills recently specifically for high school students. Twenty-three participants from 12 schools in Kingston and rural Jamaica namely: Ardenne, Camperdown, Campion, Garvey Maceo, Immaculate, Jamaica College, Kingston Technical, Merl Grove, Mona High, Papine High, St. Jago and Wolmer’s Boys’. In addition, Mr. Duane Burke, teacher-librarian at Immaculate Conception High attended.

Strategic Plan Meeting for UWI Students with Campus Principal

Principal and Pro-Vice Chancellor of the Mona Campus, Professor Elsa Leo-Rhynie seeks to engage all major stakeholders in discussion on the way forward for the institution, as such all students both part-time and full-time, are invited to share their ideas at a meeting to be held in the Assembly Hall at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 14, 2006. This meeting is apart of the process of preparing a Strategic Plan for the 2007-20012 period.
