UWI Lecturer Participates in Youth Drama Festival and Master Classes in Singapore

Brian Heap, Senior Lecturer in Drama at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts at UWI, Mona recently completed residency in Singapore at the invitation of the Singapore Ministry of Education to participate in the Central Adjudication of English Drama in the Singapore Youth Festival. This Festival serves as a benchmarking exercise for Drama in schools across Singapore and is conducted biennially over a three week period.  Mr. Heap was among a panel of five Drama practitioners namely:  Dr. Joe Winston, Associate Professor of Drama at the University of Warwick, UK; Ms. Peggy Ferroa, writer and President of the Singapore Drama Educators Association; Mr. Jeremiah Choy, noted Singaporean actor and theatre director; and Ms.

UWI Hosts World Telecommunication and Information Society Conference

The University of the West Indies, Mona through the Telecommunications Policy and Management Programme will host a World Telecommunication and Information Society Day: ICT Policy Conference on May 17-18, 201. The event marks International Telecommunications and ICT Day. Copies of the full Caribbean Broadband and ICT Indicators Survey Report will be made available to all registered participants.

Confucius Institute Shows “Wild China”

The Confucius Institute at UWI, Mona hosts a six-part series of the film, ‘Wild China'  as part of  its Film of the Month. The first part of the Series will be shown on Friday, April 29, 2011 at 6:30 p.m.  at the Institute.

The film, narrated by Bernard Hill provides an expansive look of China presenting viewers with a perspective which borders between modern-day efficiency and old world traditions.  “Wild China” takes one on a journey of the rich history and showcases the beauty of China.

UWI Mentorship Programme Hosts Closing Ceremony

The University of the West Indies, Mona through the Office of Student Services and Development will host the Closing Ceremony and Dinner for the UWI Mentorship Programme. The event takes place on Thursday, April 28, 2011 at 6:30 pm at the Rex Nettleford Hall Multipurpose Room.

The UWI Mentorship Programme is organized by the Office of Student Services and Development at UWI, Mona to give especially final year students an opportunity to enhance their social skills and to provide them with personal and professional growth through interaction with seasoned professionals. The Programme also affords the student an opportunity to network and get a realistic look of the world of work.

First Refereed Edition of the UWI Quality Education Forum Journal Now Available

The 17th Edition of the UWI Quality Education Forum Journal is now available.  The Office of the Board for Undergraduate Studies (OBUS) in collaboration with the Department of Language, Linguistics and Philosophy at UWI are pleased to announce that this is the first refereed edition of the Journal.  The theme of the Journal is "Postcolonial Perspectives: The Place and Politics of Foundation Courses in the University of the Twenty-First Century".

Film Screening: The Lion of Judah

The Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work at UWI, Mona presents a film screening of the documentary, “The Lion of Judah” on Thursday, April 21, 2011 at 4:30 p at the N4, UWI, Mona. The film details the historic state visit of His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie to Jamaica on April 21, 1966. The event is in celebration of the 45th anniversary of the Emperor Haile Selassie’s Visit to Jamaica.

Campus Talent Agency Hosts Fundraising Concert

VYBE, is a free concert featuring student talent from the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus such as artistes, poets and dancers. The concert is set for Friday, April 15 at 6:00 pm on the lawns of the Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC). The event forms part of the CARIMAC Building Fund fundraising effort. 

Popular campus artistes like Garrizon, Gramma Zone and Iyah Ingi will perform at VYBE, accompanied by poets like award-winning Sean Bennett among others and dancer Ariane Collman.

UWI Lecturers Examines Ethical Perspectives on Jamaican Popular Culture

UWI Lecturers, Dr. Donna Hope Marquis and Mr. Dennis Howard will speak at a seminar entitled “Ethical Perspectives on Jamaican Popular Culture:  Focus on Dancehall Music”.  Yasus Afari, reggae poet, will also share on this occasion. The seminar is organized by the St. Michael’s Theological College on Saturday, April 16, 2011 at 8:30 am.

CARIMAC Western Jamaica Lecture – New Media and Social and Economic Changes

The Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC) at the UWI, Mona –Western Jamaica Campus will host an inaugural public lecture entitled, New Media and Social and Economic Change: From Possibilities to Practices. The Lecture will be delivered by Professor Stephen McDowell, John H. Phipps Professor of Communication and Dean of the School of Communication, Florida State University, USA. The event takes place on Tuesday, April 19, 2011 at 6 pm at Seminar Room 21, UWI, Mona-Western Jamaica Campus.

ICS Launches Entertainment & Cultural Enterprise Management Internship Programme

The Institute of Caribbean Studies (ICS) at UWI, Mona will host the official launch of the Summer Internship Programme which forms part of the Bachelor of Arts in Entertainment and Cultural Enterprise Management. The Launch takes place on Thursday, April 14, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. at the Multifunctional Room of the UWI Main Library. 

The Summer Internship is designed to provide students pursuing a degree in Entertainment and Cultural Enterprise Management with real-world work experience to complement their classroom learning. It is also an opportunity for students to network with potential employers in the entertainment and cultural enterprise industries.
