Annual World of Work Seminar
The Annual World of Work Seminar series organized by the Office of Placement and Career Services, Mona will continue on Thursday, November 20, beginning at 3:00 p.m. at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre. This week’s seminar is “Budgeting – Stretching the Disposable Income”. The presenter is Micah Davis – General Manager, University of the West Indies (Mona) and Community Cooperative Credit Union Limited.
Chat Bout Series
The School for Graduate Studies and Research, UWI Mona presents its 10th Lecture in its Chat Bout Series on Thursday, November 20 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Undercroft, Senate Building. The Presenter will be Dr. Michael Witter, Senior Lecturer and Head, Department of Economics, Faculty of Social Sciences. The Lecture is entitled Water Development Issues for Civil Society. The UWI community and the public are invited.
Department of Economics Public Lecture
The Department of Economics, UWI Mona presents a public lecture by Professor Colin Kirkpatrick, Professor of Development Economics and Director of the Institute for Development Policy and Management at the University of Manchester, United Kingdom. The Lecture is entitled Assessing the Impact of Regulation in Developing Countries. It will take place on Tuesday, November 18 at 6:00 p.m. at Room D101, Mona School of Business, Alister McIntyre Building at UWI, Mona. Members of the University community and the public are invited to attend.
JADOL Hosts One-Day Seminar
The Jamaican Association for Distance and Open Learning (JADOL) will be hosting a one-day seminar entitled “Looking to the Future: Mobile Technology in Support of Distance Education” on Wednesday, November 19 from 8:30 – 3:30 p.m. at the Terra Nova Hotel. Speakers at the seminar will be Ms. Nancy Gilligan, of IBM, Mrs. Sonia Bennett-Cunningham, HEART/NTA and Mr. Anthony Smith, of Cable and Wireless.
Jamaica Language Unit
On Friday, November 21 beginning at 5:00 p.m. the Jamaican Language Unit will host its first public lecture to discuss the issues relating to language planning and the popularizing of Creole in Central America. The lecture is entitled “The Creole Language Question in Belize”. The guest speaker will be Silvana Woods, a Belizean public activist and the venue is the Inter-Faculty Lecture Theatre (IFLT). The lecture will begin at 5:00 p.m.
Jamaican Historical Society Lecture
The Jamaican Historical Society will host a lecture entitled “Regimes in Refuge – Haitian Heads of State in Jamaica 1843 – 1956”. The Lecture will be given by Dr. Matthew Smith, Lecturer, Department of History, Mona on Wednesday, November 26 at 6:30 p.m. at the Liguanea Club. The public is invited. You are reminded that the annual membership fees for the Historical Society are J$500 and retirees and students with ID J$200.
Presentation on Prostate Cancer and You
The UWI Health Centre will host a presentation on Prostate Cancer and You – The Importance of Screening, on Thursday November 20 from 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. in the WIGUT Meeting Room at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge. The presenter is consultant Urologist, Dr. William Aiken. The Health Centre has organised the presentation as cancer of the prostate continues to be of great concern in the region. Male members of the UWI community are specially invited to attend and to have their PSA testing done, enjoy the fellowship and a cool drink.
Safe and Healthy Market Place for All
Graduate Health Promotion students in the Department of Community Health and Psychiatry, Faculty of Medical Sciences, UWI Mona, in collaboration with the Papine Market Management Team will host a Community Health Fair on Friday, November 28 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Papine Market. The Health Fair, to be held under the theme, Safe and Healthy Marketplace for All, is also being organised in collaboration with several community and business representatives from Papine.
The Second UWI/Carreras Distinguished Lecture
The second UWI/Carreras Distinguished Lecture entitled “Leadership and Corporate Governance” will be delivered by Professor Patrick Wright, Professor of Human Resource Studies at the Centre for Advanced Human Resource Studies at Cornell University. Tourism and Urban Development for Peace
The Department of Management Studies, UWI will host a workshop on “Tourism and Urban Development for Peace” from November 27 – 29 at the Institute of Jamaica. Topics to be discussed at the Workshop include: Tourism and Urban Economic Development Renewal, Community Tourism, Return of the Cruise Ship to Kingston Harbour, Tourism Marketing and destination Branding, Tourism and Inner City Peace, Entrepreneurship, Small Business Culture and Tourism Development, Linking Tourism to the communities: Innovative IT, and “Foresighting”. The public is invited.
