Two Thousand five Hundred and Fifty Four Students
Some two Thousand five hundred and fifty four persons graduated with Bachelors, certificates, diplomas and higher degrees from the University of the West Indies, Moan Campus. Of that number 161 graduates have been awarded their degrees with first class honours. Chancellor of the UWI, Sir George Alleyne, in his address said that it was clear that the University is taking seriously its function of teaching and examining as judged by the student numbers. Total enrolment at the end of the academic year 2002/2003 stood at 11676, an increase of 4.7 over the previous year.
Young Economists Association
The Young Economists Association at UWI Mona will host a presentation by Minister of Education, Youth and Culture, the Hon. Maxine Henry-Wilson on Thursday, November 28 at 2:30 p.m. The venue is the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre, Faculty of Social Sciences. The Minister will speak on the topic, “The Government’s Decision to Reduce Funding to Tertiary Institutions.” Specially invited guests at the meeting will be members of the media, as well as representatives from other tertiary level institutions. Members of the University community and the public are invited to attend.
Annual Graduation Ceremonies
The Annual Graduation Ceremonies at the UWI Mona Campus will take place on Friday, November 7 and Saturday, November 8 on the lawns adjacent to the Undercroft of the Senate Building beginning at 5.30 p.m. On Friday, November 8, graduates of the Faculties of Humanities and Education, Engineering, Pure and Applied Sciences, Agriculture and Natural Sciences and Law will be presented to newly appointed Chancellor, Sir George Alleyne.
Chancellor Hall Donates Bursary
Two students of Mona High School in Kingston are the recipients of bursaries donated by students residing on Block X of Chancellor Hall, UWI Mona. The students, Annorea Williams and Andre Morrison received funds to assist with fees for their CXC examinations that they will sit this June. Block X adopted Mona High School as its outreach project in March of this year and is working to assist the students in variety of ways and to build good relationships with them. The students were selected based on financial need, academic performance and involvement in extra-curricular activities.
City Life in Caribbean History
The Third Text and Testimony Collective Conference on “City Life in Caribbean History” will take place from December 11-13 at the Cave Hill Campus.

Mona Library hosts Members of SEFLIN
Executive Director of the Southeast Florida Library Information Network, Tom Sloan and four Board Members: Brian Kelly, Director of Library Services at Palm Beach Community College; Larry Miller, Executive Director of Library Services, Florida International University; William Miller, Director of Libraries, Florida Atlantic University; Samuel Morrison, Director Emeritus, Broward County Library System were guests of the University of the West Indies Library and the Jamaican Library Community during the period October 27-30.
New Masters Programme in Communication
The Caribbean Institute of Media and Communication (CARIMAC) at UWI Mona has announced a new Masters Programme in Communication for Social and Behaviour Change which will begin in January, 2004. This new Masters Programme will provide students with a solid foundation in theory, research methods and practice. Students will be prepared to develop, deliver, and evaluate communication campaigns for social and behaviour change as well as to disseminate information to a wide variety of potential audiences.
Occupational and Environmental Safety and Health Degree Programmes
The UWI, Mona Campus is currently developing Undergraduate and Postgraduate Degree Programmes in Occupational and Environmental Safety and Health which could be offered beginning as early as the 2004/5 academic year. The structure and content for the programmes are now being developed through a series of workshops with occupational and environmental safety and health experts funded by the Environmental Foundation of Jamaica at a cost of just under J$1.4 million.
