Rastafari Film Series

The Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work, UWI, Mona will host the first film in the Jamaican Rastafari Film Series titled, Runaway Slave: From Botswana to South Africa to Bobo Hill in Jamaica. The film screening takes place on Friday, April 9, 2010 at 6 pm at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1), UWI, Mona. The documentary traces the Journey of a Rastaman, Jesse Jendah, from Botswana to South Africa to Bobo Hill in Jamaica.

The Series is in celebration of eighty years of the Rastafari Movement and fifty years since the Rastafari Report by the University.

Professor Verene Shepherd Appointed to UN Human Rights Council

Professor Verene Shepherd, Professor of Social History, UWI, Mona has been appointed to the UN Human Rights Council´s Working Group of Experts on people of African descent, to represent the Caribbean and Latin America, replacing the late Prof Nettleford for the rest of his 2 year term. Her appointment takes effect on April 12, 2010. The appointment was made during the Council’s thirteenth session and followed consultations by the Consultative Group and the President of the Council and regional coordinators.

UWI Historians Publish CAPE History Volume and Host Lecture Series

The Department of History and Archaeology at UWI, Mona has published a much needed text for CAPE History students and teachers. The book titled The Caribbean in the Atlantic World and Global Transformation: Lectures in CAPE History is written specifically for students and teachers of the CAPE History syllabus. The contributed essays are edited by lecturers in the Department, Drs. Jenny Jemmott, Aleric Josephs and Kathleen E. A. Monteith.

The sixteen lectures, nine of which relate to the Caribbean, and seven to the Atlantic and global transformation, cover a significant portion of Units One and Two of the history syllabus, providing important factual information and analysis. Students and teachers of CAPE History will find this a very valuable book.

UWI Lecturer Assists with Anger Management in Jamaican Schools

UWI lecturer and founder/ coordinator of UWI Violence Prevention Programme (UWIVPP), Dr. Claudette Crawford-Brown recently participated in a Handing Over Ceremony for the Safe Schools for Learning Project which is directed by the Ministry of Education. Dr. Crawford-Brown has developed the Anger Management and Conflict Resolution package, with the technical assistance of UNICEF, to be used in the Safe Schools for Learning Project.

Rex Nettleford Symposium -"The Sage Has Come of Age"

“The Sage Has Come of Age”, is the title of the symposium being held in honour of the late Professor Emeritus, Professor Rex Nettleford on April 7-9, 2010 at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre, UWI, Mona. The symposium will discuss Professor Nettleford’s vision on the edification of workers and share ideas for crafting strategies to help Jamaican and Caribbean workers’ move forward to achieve sustainable competitive advantages in their countries and the region.

Student Awards Ceremony

The Office of Student Services and Development, UWI Mona will host the annual Student Awards Ceremony on Saturday, April 10 at 6:00 p.m. at the Assembly Hall, UWI, Mona. The ceremony is designed to recognize students who have excelled in co-curricular activities, culture, service and leadership. In addition students who have attained a 3.6 and above GPA in the last academic year will be highlighted on this occasion. Senator the Hon. Marlene Malahoo Forte, Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade will be the guest speaker.

Training the Trainers for project planning and evaluation in Health Research

The World Health Organization/Pan American Health Organization (WHO/PAHO) and the Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR), in collaboration with the UWI’s Clinical Epidemiology Unit (UWI-CEU) within the Epidemiology Research Unit (ERU), will host a follow-up four day training workshop in Train the Trainer course for six  researchers and an administrator  from  April 6-9, 2010 .
The WHO/TDR Initiative “Planning for Success” was established in 2003 to support skill-building for project management in health research in developing countries The intention is to strengthen the skills of  potential trainers to enable them to train researchers to effectively plan, implement, monitor and evaluate biomedical research projects.

UWI STAT Inducts New Ambassadors

The UWI STAT (Students Today, Alumni Tomorrow) Ambassador Corps (Mona) will host its annual Induction Ceremony on Tuesday, April 6, 2010 at 2 pm at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona. At the Ceremony twenty-two new ambassadors will be inducted. The main address on this occasion will be delivered by Professor E. Nigel Harris, Vice Chancellor, UWI.

The UWI STAT Ambassador Corps is a student organization with the mandate to provide service, leadership and support interests and traditions of the UWI, students and alumni through volunteerism, responsible citizenship and the promotion of Caribbean pride, culture and values.

Symposium In Honour of the Late Professor the Hon. Rex Nettleford

The Hugh Lawson Shearer Trade Union Education Institute (HLSTUEI), Open Campus, UWI in collaboration with the Mona Campus, UWI has organized a symposium in honour of the late Professor Emeritus, Professor Rex Nettleford. “Civil Society in Jamaica – Resignation or Resurrection?”

“Civil Society in Jamaica – Resignation or Resurrection?” is the title of the public seminar being staged as part of the Colloquium Series of the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES), UWI, Mona. The seminar takes place on Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at 2:30 pm at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona.

Presenters at the seminar will include: The Honourable Dwight Nelson, Minister of National Security; Howard Hamilton, QC; Horace Levy, former Lecturer, UWI, Mona; and Rev. Dr. Rodrick Hewitt, Minister of Religion, Hope United Church.
