Inaugural Professorial Lecture - “The Other Side of the Pancake”

“The Other Side of the Pancake: Reading and Reasoning in a Postmodern Mode” is the title of the inaugural professorial lecture to be delivered by Dr. Claudette Williams, Professor of Hispanic Caribbean Literature, UWI, Mona. The lecture is scheduled for Friday, April 23, 2010 at 5 pm at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1), UWI, Mona.

Public Seminar

The Department of Literatures in English, UWI, Mona hosts a public seminar entitled "To Be or Not to Be ... a Citizen: Core Values, Liberal Racism and Europe's new Dilemma". Dr. Berndt Clavier, Associate Professor, International Migration and Ethnic Relations, Malmö University, Sweden will deliver the lecture which is scheduled for Friday April 23, 2010 at 3 pm, in Room 59, New Arts Block in the Faculty of Humanities and Education, UWI, Mona.

Distinguished Lecture- “1810-2010: From Solitude to Solidarity”

The UWI, Mona and the Embassy of the Republic of Colombia will stage a distinguished lecture titled, “1810-2010: From Solitude to Solidarity” Reflections on the Past and the Future of Latin America on the Bicentenary of Its Independence. The lecture which is a part of the Bicentennial Celebrations takes place on Thursday, April 22, 2010 at 3 pm at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1), UWI, Mona. The lecture will be delivered by Dr Gustavo Bell Lemus, former Vice President of Colombia.

“Inside South Africa”

The Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work hosts the second documentary in the Jamaica Rastafari Film Series entitled “Inside South Africa”. The documentary highlights the turmoil and violence of Apartheid South Africa through the Rastafarian Lenses. The film screening takes place on Friday, April 16, 2010 at 6 pm at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1), UWI, Mona.

University Players to Stage Barbara Gloudon’s classic comedy ‘Appropriate Behaviour’

The award-winning University Players present their first production for 2010 entitled, “Appropriate Behaviour” at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts from May 6 to May 16. The play showcases the world of work and office life in particular and the interactions between workers and management in Jamaica. The Players’ strong cadre of performers is led by Nadean Rawlins, Marguerite Newland, Christopher McFarlane, Rishille Pelicie, Nadia Khan, Noelle Kerr, Jean-Paul Menou, Melward Morris and Maurice Bryan, who play alongside Mona campus faces like Althea Gordon-Clennon, Nicosia Shakes, Kashka Hemans, and Martin Thame.

“Business Development in the Caribbean: Confronting the Challenges”

The Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) candidates of the Mona School of Business (MSB) will host a Business Leaders’ Conference under the theme “Business Development in the Caribbean: Confronting the Challenges.”  The Conference takes place on April 23-24, 2010 at the  Mona School of Business (MSB) Lecture Theatre, UWI, Mona.

Topics to be explored at the Conference include: National Policy Perspectives, Corporate Governance and Leadership, Wealth Creation and Preservation and Entrepreneurship and Small Businesses.

The event is aimed at encouraging doctoral students to engage and share perspectives and discourse on topical issues and facilitate networking and knowledge sharing among key stakeholders.

50 Schools Participate in UWI, Mona Mathematics Problem Solving Competition

Students from fifty schools from across Jamaica will participate in the annual UWI sponsored 'Mathematics Problem Solving Competition' organised by the Department of Educational Studies, UWI, Mona on Thursday, April 15, 2010 at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona. The competition is geared towards grade nine students and teachers. It seeks to develop an appreciation of Mathematics as a problem-solving tool and to note the relevance of Mathematics to real world situations.  Mathematics underpins science and technology and many other areas of study. In addition, it provides the springboard for the development of problem-solving skills which are necessary in this globalised and competitive world.

UWI, Mona Hosts Lecture for CAPE Unit 2 Students

The Department of History and Archaeology at UWI, Mona will host the second lecture in its Series for student and teachers of CAPE Unit 2 on Saturday, April 17, 2010 at 10 am at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre (N1), UWI, Mona. The lecture will address select topics covered on the CAPE History syllabus including: Global Conflict and Totalitarianism, Independence and National Development of Venezuela to 1900 and the Impact of the Atlantic Slave Trade on West African Societies and Economies: 1450-1800.

“Civil Society in Jamaica – Resignation or Resurrection?”

 “Civil Society in Jamaica – Resignation or Resurrection?” is the title of the public seminar being staged as part of the Colloquium Series of the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES), UWI, Mona. The seminar takes place on Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at 2 pm at the Undercroft, UWI, Mona.
