“Ethiopia Speaks Jamaican Creole”

"Ethiopia Speaks Jamaican Creole: Voices From Shashimane" is the title of the public lecture being hosted by the Jamaica Language Unit in the Department of Language, Linguistics and Philosophy, UWI, Mona. Dr. Renato Tomei, Research Fellow in English Studies at the University for Foreigners in Perugia, Italy will deliver the Lecture which is scheduled for Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at 5 pm at the Neville Hall Lecture Theatre, UWI, Mona.
The university community and the public are invited.
MSME Symposia Series Continues

The UWI, Mona in collaboration with the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce and Jamaica Trade and Invest will host a second symposium titled, "Two Key Types of Non-Financial Support Needed: BDS and Networking and Clustering". This symposium is a part of a series of symposia being held under the theme: "Creating a Policy Framework for the Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprise (MSME) Sector in the Jamaican Economy." The upcoming Symposium takes place on Wednesday, May 26, 2010. The final symposium in the Series will explore the topic, "Key Issues for the Future: Internationalisation, Innovation, and Intellectual Property Rights".
“Funding Higher Education in Jamaica”

“Funding Higher Education in Jamaica” is the theme of the public forum being hosted by the Association of Caribbean Higher Education Administrators (ACHEA) Jamaica Chapter on Monday, May 10 at 2 pm at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre, UWI, Mona. The guest speaker will be The Most Hon. Edward Seaga, Distinguished Fellow, UWI and Pro-Chancellor, University of Technology (Jamaica).
The forum will feature a panel discussion with panellists including: Dr. Peter-John Gordon, Economist and Research Fellow, SALISES, UWI, Mona, Jovaughn Neil, President–Elect, Guild of Students, UWI, Mona, Mrs. Lenice Barnett, Executive Director, Students Loan Bureau and Mr. Basil Waite, Opposition Spokesman on Education.
Graduate Education Seminar to Mark Education Week

The School of Education, UWI, Mona will host a graduate seminar on Thursday, May 6, 2010 starting at 9 am at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre to mark Education Week. On this occasion the research of outstanding graduate students will be highlighted.
The seminar will feature a panel presentation on the Impact of Psychological Factors on Learning and presentations on Developing Language Competence and Giving Voice to Parents. Following the seminar will be an awards ceremony where the Professor Dennis Craig Award for the best doctoral thesis in language education will be awarded.
The Official Opening of the UWI Open Campus Jamaica in Mandeville

As the Open Campus of the University of the West Indies continues to improve and expand its services across Jamaica and the Caribbean region, the official opening of the new Mandeville site in central Jamaica will take place on Friday, May 7, 2010 at the Caledonia Mall in Mandeville. The guest speaker for this ceremony will be the Honorable Andrew Holness, Minister of Education, Jamaica.
MSB Receives Double Awards in Opportunity Funding Venture Challenge Competition
The Mona School of Business, UWI received the “Best Presentation” award in the Opportunity Funding Venture Challenge Competition (OFCVC), a business plan competition held recently in Atlanta, USA. The Mona School of Business was also placed third in the competition which saw the participation of twenty-one (21) US-based colleges and universities. MSB has been participating in the competition since 2003 and is currently the only business school outside of the USA that participates each year.
Exhibition on Plagiarism Continues

Plagiarism: A brief Overview is the title of the exhibition mounted on the ground floor of the Science Library to mark World Book and Copyright Day, April 23, 2010. The exhibition will be mounted until May 10 at the Science Library and is open for viewing from May 11-18, 2010 at the Medical Library. It features examples of plagiarism, tips to avoid plagiarism, as well as UWI’s plagiarism policy.
Professor Brian Meeks Reappointed Public Orator at UWI, Mona
Professor Brian Meeks, Director of the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute for Social and Economic Studies (SALISES) has been reappointed to be the public orator at the UWI, Mona Campus. The appointment was made at the annual University Council meeting which was held on April 16 at the Cave Hill Campus. He will serve for another three-year term. Each campus of the UWI has its own Public Orator who prepares and delivers citations at University functions such as graduation and awards ceremonies and convocations.
UWI, Mona Hosts Handing Over Ceremony of BSW Regupol Athletic Track to Hon. Usain Bolt

The University of the West Indies, Mona hosts the historical official Handing Over Ceremony of BSW’s Regupol Athletic Track for the Mona Campus on Friday, April 30, 2010 at 11 am at the UWI, Mona Bowl for Sporting Excellence.
The state-of-the-art 400m BSW Regupol athletic running track will be presented to the world’s fastest man, the Hon. Usain Bolt. The track is a gift to Usain and a home for his running club, the Racers Track Club. It will rival the best tracks in the world as well as facilitate the offering of world-class training facilities to world-class athletes.
First Cohort of Haitian Creole for Select Interest Groups Graduates

The Jamaica Language Unit (JLU) in the Department of Language, Linguistics and Philosophy at UWI, Mona will on Friday, May 7, 2010 at 4 pm at the Multifunctional Room, Main Library see 35 participants graduate from a six week Certificate course in Haitian Creole for Select Interest Groups.
The course was designed to assist in the immediate relief efforts in Haiti by bridging the language barrier between the disaster relief experts and the Haitian population. The first cohort consisted of medical personnel, law enforcement officers, coastguards and engineers. The course covered basic proficiency in reading, writing, listening and speaking of Haitian Creole for a work context primarily.
