Memorial Service for the First UWI,Mona Director of Sports

A memorial service for the late Olympian, Keith A. Gardner O.D. will be held on Monday, June 25, 2012, at the University Chapel, beginning at 10:00 a.m.  Mr. Gardner was the first Director of Sports at The UWI, Mona Campus. 
 
He came to the Mona Campus after a short career as an athlete during which he took on the world of track and field,   conquering it time and again as evidenced by his records and gold medals obtained at the 1954 and 1958 Commonwealth Games and his bronze medal in the 1960 Olympic Games. Indeed, he was the only Jamaican athlete to have won four medals at a single Commonwealth Games. On completion of his track career, he coached Excelsior High School before joining The UWI, Mona family.
 

UWI to Launch Caribbean Disaster Risk Atlas

The Institute for Sustainable Development, The University of the West Indies will on Monday, June 25, 2012 at 10 am launch the Caribbean Disaster Risk Atlas at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre, UWI, Mona. The Atlas is a Project funded by the World Bank and implemented by UWI. The Atlas will provide flooding and earthquake data for three Caribbean countries namely: Jamaica, Barbados and Grenada in order to improve on the management of these risks. 
 

Sir Shridath Ramphal to Launch Book on Caribbean Challenges

‘Caribbean Challenges- Sir Shridath Ramphal’s Collected Counsel,’ is the title of the book to be launched by Sir Shridath Ramphal, Chair, the Rex Nettleford Foundation, former Commonwealth Secretary General, former Chancellor of The University of the West Indies (UWI) and Warwick University and renowned Caribbean Scholar. The launch takes place on Monday, June 18, 2012, at 6 pm at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference Centre, UWI, Mona.
 
The Most Hon. P J Patterson, former Prime Minister of Jamaica and Regionalist will deliver the main address. Patterson is also the recipient of the highest award in CARCOM, The Order of the Caribbean Community (OCC).  
 

Ten to Graduate from Community Care for the Elderly Programme at UWI, Mona

 
Ten participants from Jamaica and Antigua, will graduate during the Closing Exercise for the 20th Regional Course in “Community Care of the Elderly in the Caribbean”, on Wednesday, June 13, 2012 at 10:30 a. m. in the MPH classroom UWI, Mona. 
 

UWI Lecturer Signs Book- October Afternoon

UWI, Mona lecturer, Dr. Paulette Ramsay will read excerpts from her book “October Afternoon” during the Book Signing and Reading on Wednesday, June 13, 2012 at 2 pm at the UWI Bookshop. The book is a collection of poems which deal with issue of subjectivity, identity, feminism and racial and cultural pride. It is also about the word and the importance of writing in self definition. Books will also be on sale on this occasion. 
 
The university community and the public are invited to the event. 
 

Earthquake Lecture

Jamaica’s Earthquake Threat is the subject of discussion at the public lecture being organized by the Disaster Risk Reduction Centre at UWI. The Lecture is scheduled for Tuesday, June 12, 2012 at 5:30 pm at the Blue Room at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge and Conference, Centre, UWI, Mona. Dr. Lyndon Brown, Research Fellow and Head, Earthquake Unit, UWI will deliver the Lecture. 
 
His presentation will share about the finding of a recent sonar profiles in Kingston Harbour which has revealed the presence of previously unknown faults. It will also highlight the impact and the implications of the earthquake threat to eastern Jamaica. 
 

Department of Government Graduate Seminar Focuses on Community Policing

“Issues and Challenges to Implementing Community Policing as Organizational Change” is the title of the seminar being organized by the Department of Government, UWI, Mona. The seminar is slated for Wednesday, June 6, 2012 at 10 am in the Faculty of Social Sciences Conference Room. The presentation will be made by Dormah Harrison, Master of Philosophy (MPhil) Candidate in the Department. 
 
All are invited to attend. 
 

UWI, Mona Hosts Beach Football Invitational and Fun Day

The University of the West Indies, Mona through its Sports Office and Kier present a Beach Invitational Football Tournament and Fun Day on Sunday, June 10 at 9 am at the newly opened UWI Sands at the Mona Bowl. The Tournament will see over eleven teams competing for the $60,000 top prize.  Competing teams include: premier league, business house and super league teams. There will also be an Exhibition Female Football Team as part of the lineup.
 
Additional teams may also enter the Invitational by contacting the UWI, Mona Sports Office for registration and qualifying details at 702-4476 by June 6.
 
All are invited to attend especially families. Admission is free. 
 

The University Singers Presents “Jamaica 50: The Golden Jubilee”

The University Singers, in its 2012 Concert Season, joins with Jamaica in the celebration of the fiftieth year as an independent nation. Dubbed: JAMAICA 50: THE GOLDEN JUBILEE, the group has taken this concept and translated it into a Jamaican masterpiece. This musical feast will take its audiences through music dating back to the pre and post independence era, a journey involving a wide range of musical genres spanning religious, classical, art, folk and popular songs written and composed by Jamaicans. The recurring theme that will permeate the performances celebrates Jamaica as a nation state. 
 

Learn the Basics in Research Skills Training

The Epidemiology Research Unit (ERU) of the Tropical Medicine Research Institute (TMRI) presents a Basic Research Skills Training Workshop. The Workshop is slated for June 4-7,2012 at the Sickle Cell Unit Seminar Room, UWI, Mona.
  
The Workshop will address the following: 
•        identifying important reasons for carrying out research and choosing relevant and feasible topics for research; 
•        defining a research question and choosing the study design most appropriate to meet the given objectives; 
•        calculating the sample size and sample subjects for a research study; 
•        defining measurements;
