Culture, Psychology and ‘Social Justice’

The Department of Government presents a public lecture on the topic Culture, Psychology and ‘Social Justice’ which speaks to the importance of cultural and psychological perspectives in resolving workplace and societal disputes. The Lecture is scheduled for Tuesday, August 5, 2008 at Seminar Room 4 (SR 4), Faculty of Social Sciences, UWI, Mona.

Racial Discrimination in the African Diaspora

“Linguistic Profiling and Racial Discrimination in the African Diaspora” is the title of the presentation being delivered by Professor John Baugh, Washington University in St. Louis, USA and well-known African-American linguist and education expert. The presentation takes place on Thursday, July 24, 2008 at 6pm at the Aubrey Fraser Lecture Theatre, Norman Manley Law School, UWI, Mona.

General Stores Closure

General Stores will close for its annual stock taking exercise from July 29 to August 6, 2008 and will re-open for business on August 7, 2008.

Call for Abstracts – FMS Annual Research Conference

The Faculty of Medical Sciences, UWI, Mona will host its 17th Annual Research Conference from November 12-14, 2008. This year’s theme is "Forensic Medicine: Birth, Life, Death...” The Sir Kenneth Standard Lecture will be delivered by Professor Burkhard Madea, Institute of Forensic Medicine, University of Bonn, Germany on Wednesday, November 12, 2008. Workshops, poster and oral presentations take place at the Main Medical Lecture Theatre located at the University Hospital of the West Indies on November 13 and 14.

Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences Pre-Orientation

The Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences hosts a series of Pre-Orientation Exercises for new students entering the Faculty in the 2008/9 academic year. The upcoming series takes place on July 21, 23 and 25 at the Physiology Lecture Theatre and July 28, 30 and 31 at the Interfaculty Lecture Theatre starting at 10 am daily. Students may contact the Main Office of the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences at telephone 977-1785, to be informed of their respective orientation date.

Public Forum-ASM Tropical Medicine Research Institute

A public forum for the Annual Scientific Meeting of the Tropical Medicine Research Institute, UWI, Mona is scheduled for Wednesday, July 30, 2008 at 9 am at the Main Medical Lecture Theatre.

The public forum will feature a series of lectures from the four units that constitute the Tropical Medicine Research Institute namely: The Tropical Metabolism Research Unit, Epidemiology Research Unit, Sickle Cell Unit in Jamaica and the Chronic Disease Research Centre in Barbados.

OESH Symposium

The Occupational and Environmental, Safety and Health Programme at UWI, Mona hosts a Symposium themed “Cutting Edge Developments in Global Occupational and Environmental, Safety and Health (OESH)”. The Symposium takes place on Tuesday, July 29, 2008 at 1:30 pm in the Chemistry Lecture Theatre (Chem 5).

UWI Summer Football Mania 2008

The Sports Department at the UWI, Mona is hosting the inaugural staging of the UWI Summer Football Mania, themed “Unearthing Talent”, aimed at offering a productive alternative for youth during the summer months. The Summer Mania takes place from Monday to Friday, July 21 to August 1, 2008 at the UWI Mona Bowl.

Handing-Over Ceremony

The UWI Library in collaboration with the Department of Surgery, Radiology, Anaesthesia and Intensive Care (Ophthalmology Section), UWI, Mona will host a Handing-Over Ceremony of Dr. Garth Taylor’s Resource Material Collection in Ophthalmology. The Ceremony takes place on Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at 4:30 pm at the Seminar Room, Medical Library.

Re-UWI-fication: The Grand Reunion Fete

The University of the West Indies, Mona presents its Grand Re-UWI-fication fete, an absolutely fitting finale to its 60th anniversary Convocation Week, on Saturday, July 19, 2008 beginning at 9 pm at the Students’ Union, UWI, Mona. Music provided by the Fab 5 Band and Peter Phillips Disco.
