Vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies (The UWI) and Chair of the CARICOM Reparations Commission, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles addressed the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on March 25, 2024. He was the keynote speaker at a commemorative meeting of the General Assembly to mark the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade (General Assembly: 64th plenary meeting, 78th session). The University of Glasgow (UoG) and The UWI Mona School of Education are pleased to announce a series of collaborative hybrid seminars focused on innovative teaching methods and fostering academic exchange. These seminars will be held on March 27^th and 28^th at the Mona Campus.

Seventeen-year old Shaqane Greene of Mona High School appears to have his sights set on competing at an Olympic Game in the near future. Shaqane’s interest was piqued after he was selected to lead the Jamaican leg of the 3rd edition of the Relay around the World on March 14^th, 2024, as part of the run-up to the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Marcia Erskine was an integral member of The UWI family. Her sudden demise is an immeasurable loss." These were among some of the sentiments expressed by colleagues upon hearing of the unexpected passing of Marcia Erskine, a Trinidadian-born UWI alumna and public relations maven.

At the time of her passing, on March 6, 2024, she was the managing director of her Kingston-based agency, Marcia Erskine and Associates, and a communication consultant to The UWI Office of the Vice-Chancellor.

The team at the Hugh Wynter Institute wants to highlight the significance of March as Endometriosis Awareness Month. Endometriosis is a common yet often misdiagnosed condition that affects many women, including our friends, family, and colleagues.

Professor Donovan Campbell, a distinguished member of the Department of Geography and Geology within the Faculty of Science and Technology at The University of the West Indies, Mona has been appointed to the Decade Advisory Board. This advisory body supports UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), guiding the implementation of the Ocean Decade, a crucial initiative aimed at reversing the decline of the ocean system and fostering sustainable development.

Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, Vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies has hailed the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with South Africa’s North-West University as “historic and emotional”.

The Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) at The University of the West Indies, Mona, recently hosted the 29th Mona Symposium on Natural Products and Medicinal Chemistry from January 3 to 6, 2024.
