The UWI announces the appointments of new Professors in the fields of Music, Law, Astronomy, Engineering, and Medical Microbiology

The Office of Administration at The University of the West Indies (The UWI) is pleased to announce the promotion of five academics to Professors, the highest academic rank at the institution. The newly appointed are Professor David Akombo in the field of music; Professor David Berry in the field of law; Professor Shirin Haque, the first at the University in the field of astronomy; Professor Krishpersad Manohar in the field of mechanical engineering and Professor Alison Merle Nicholson in the field of Medical Microbiology.

UWI expert tapped to participate in global research initiative to find a new model of efficient urbanization

The Urban Health and Wellbeing Program (UHWP), a new global research network, has recruited Professor Anthony Clayton, The University of the West Indies’ leading expert in foresighting and future-oriented planning, to lead on and share the lessons on urban design learned in the Caribbean.

The program, which will be implemented over the next three (3) years, is a joint initiative between the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP), the International Society for Urban Health (ISUH) and the International Science Council (ISC).

UWI Professor elected to 'strategy arm' of American Society for Microbiology

The University of the West Indies’ (The UWI) Professor of Molecular Biology, Professor Paul Brown, was recently elected to the Council on Microbial Sciences (COMS). His term in office commenced on July 1, 2022, and will run until June 30, 2025. Prof. Brown’s successful candidacy represents an opportunity for him to serve the breadth of the Society of over 30,000 members across the globe, and to be a representative for diverse microbial scientists across the world. This post is one of ten (10) elected positions on COMS which has a composition of close to 95 members.

The University of the West Indies’ leading expert on national security and economic development, Professor Anthony Clayton, gave a keynote expert assessment to the United Nations Secretary-General's Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters (ABDM) at the UN Headquarters in New York - hosted from June 28–30, 2022.

The P.J. Patterson Centre for Africa-Caribbean Advocacy now designated an Institute of The UWI

At the sitting of its University Finance and General Purposes Committee (U-F&GPC) on October 27, 2021, The University of the West Indies (The UWI) ratified the Naming Committee’s decision to convert the P.J. Patterson Centre for Africa-Caribbean Advocacy into a University Institute.
 
The re-envisioned entity is now known as the P.J. Patterson Institute for Africa-Caribbean Advocacy.
