In April, The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released the third instalment of its Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) series on climate change and its impacts. This latest report addresses the mitigation of climate change.

During the Annual Business Meeting of The University of the West Indies Council held on April 29, Dr Francis O. Severin was confirmed as Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal of The UWI Open Campus. Dr Severin’s appointment, which takes effect from August 1, 2022, was among several senior appointments and reappointments made at the meeting of the Council—the highest governing and decision-making authority of The UWI.

The University of the West Indies (The UWI), Mona Campus wishes to advise the public that on Thursday, May 5, 2022, at approximately 2 p.m., one of our female students was sexually assaulted in a restroom in the vicinity of the Annex and Senate Buildings. The incident was immediately reported to the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) and a team was deployed to the Campus to investigate. The UWI Mona Campus takes this matter very seriously and is providing all the relevant assistance to the police to apprehend the perpetrator. We are also providing psychosocial support for our student.

The University of the West Indies Mona, is pleased to announce that Director (Acting) of the Business Development Office, Mr. Fabian Stewart, was elected to the Pan American Hockey Federation (PAHF) Board of Directors where he will serve a two-year term. The announcement was made at the biennial PAHF Congress held in Santiago, Chile in January 2022.

On February 28, 2022, the United Nations body for assessing the science of climate change, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), is expected to release its latest global report addressing Impacts, Adaptation, and Vulnerability related to climate change. Five scientists from The University of the West Indies (The UWI) are among the leading authors and review experts contributing to the chapters that comprise this critical international scientific report which comes on the heels of COP 26 held in Glasgow in 2021.

Better known as the Sixth Assessment Report of Working Group II (AR6-WG2), it reveals the impacts, vulnerabilities and risks of climate change, and focuses—more than previous reports—on adaptation solutions for human societies.

The second instalment of the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, known as the Sixth Assessment Report (AR6), was released in February. The scientific report presents a dire warning of the significant implications of inaction for the globe and the region; noting that even temporarily exceeding global warming of 1.5°C that is anticipated in the next two decades will result in severe effects, some of which will be irreversible.

Climate Expert and Scientist at The University of the West Indies, Professor Michael Taylor is a contributor to Greta Thunberg’s soon to be published Climate Book. Professor Taylor, current Head of the Climate Studies Group at the Mona Campus and Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology was invited to submit a contribution on sea level rise and small islands. Professor Taylor, a globally recognised Climate Expert, has for decades focused research on regional Climate Modelling, Caribbean Climate Variability and Caribbean Climate Dynamics.

The Centre for Reparation Research (CRR) at The University of the West Indies is pleased to announce the reappointment of its Director, Professor Verene A. Shepherd, to the position of Chair of the United Nations’ Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD). CERD is the United Nation’s oldest Treaty Body, and the Committee implements the International Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
