On Monday, March 7, The University of the West Indies (The UWI) and the National Baking Company Foundation in Jamaica signed a Memorandum of Understanding to provide grant funding towards the establishment of a Centre of Excellence for Oceanography and Blue Economy (COBE).

The University of the West Indies (The UWI), Mona Campus revealed that for the first time in six years, the institution recorded a positive comprehensive income. The revelation was made at the Campus Council Meeting hosted on Monday, March 7, 2022, by Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal of The UWI Mona Campus, Professor Dale Webber.

The University of the West Indies Press (UWI Press) is pleased to announce that Beyond Homophobia: Centring LGBTQ Experiences in the Anglophone Caribbean edited by Moji Anderson and Erin C. MacLeod has been named Choice Outstanding Academic Title, 2021.

Following the specially convened sitting of The University of the West Indies’ highest governing body— University Council—on Friday, March 4, The UWI expresses thanks to the members of the independent Chancellor’s Commission on Governance chaired by the Rt. Hon. Sir Dennis Byron, for the diligence, meticulous work and continued commitment to the institution and its growth.

The 2021-2022 staging of the UWI Venture Competition (UWIVC) attracted over 80 entrants with eight finalists emerging who went on to pitch their business ideas at the finals which took place on Friday January 28, 2022. The exciting event had some of UWI’s finest students and faculty vying for the top prize and the anticipation was ‘nail biting’ waiting to hear the results. After much deliberation by our independent and highly respected panel of judges, the winners were announced and prizes were handed out.

Internationally acclaimed Economic Historian, Social Justice and Minority Empowerment Activist, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, launched his latest publication on February 25. The new book, How Britain Underdeveloped the Caribbean: A Reparation Response to Europe's Legacy of Plunder and Poverty, explores how successive governments have systematically suppressed economic development in their former colonies and have refused to accept responsibility for the debt and development support they owe the Caribbean.

“Two Thousand Three Hundred (2300), not 231”…these numbers represent the number of trees The UWI Mona Campus wants to plant as part of the National Tree Planting Initiative. Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal of The UWI Mona Campus, Professor Dale Webber made the announcement at a Handing-Over of Seedlings and Tree Planting Ceremony hosted on Thursday, February 24, 2022, on the Lawns of the Chapel on the Mona Campus.

The following statement is issued by Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, Vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies, on the passing of Sonny Ramadhin, renowned cricketer of the 1950s, and the first of phenotypic East Indian descent to represent the West Indies.

“The Caribbean world celebrates the life of Sonny Ramadhin whose contribution to its civilization and its emergence as an integrated sovereign nation is matched by few and therefore greater than most.

The University of the West Indies is globally known for its commitment to academic excellence, as well as its commitment to ethical conduct and social justice. In this regard, it rejects political actions that are rooted in militarism, disrespect for the sovereignty of legitimate nations, and impatience with the lasting power of conciliatory diplomacy.

The United Nations and its Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO, have appointed Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, Vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies, to the governing Council of the United Nations University. The appointment is for a period of six years beginning May 3, 2022.

The main functions of the Council are to formulate the principles and policies of the university, govern its operations, and consider and approve its biennial budget and work programme.
