On Monday, March 7, The University of the West Indies (The UWI) and the National Baking Company Foundation in Jamaica signed a Memorandum of Understanding to provide grant funding towards the establishment of a Centre of Excellence for Oceanography and Blue Economy (COBE).

The UWI Mona records a positive Comprehensive Income of J$467m

The University of the West Indies (The UWI), Mona Campus revealed that for the first time in six years, the institution recorded a positive comprehensive income. The revelation was made at the Campus Council Meeting hosted on Monday, March 7, 2022, by Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal of The UWI Mona Campus, Professor Dale Webber.

The 2021-2022 staging of the UWI Venture Competition (UWIVC) attracted over 80 entrants with eight finalists emerging who went on to pitch their business ideas at the finals which took place on Friday January 28, 2022. Internationally acclaimed Economic Historian, Social Justice and Minority Empowerment Activist, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, launched his latest publication on February 25. The new book, How Britain Underdeveloped the Caribbean: A Reparation Response to Europe's Legacy of Plunder and Poverty, explores how successive governments have systematically suppressed economic development in their former colonies and have refused to accept responsibility for the debt and development support they owe the Caribbean.

Statement from The UWI Vice-Chancellor on the passing of Sonny Ramadhin

The following statement is issued by Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, Vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies, on the passing of Sonny Ramadhin, renowned cricketer of the 1950s, and the first of phenotypic East Indian descent to represent the West Indies.

“The Caribbean world celebrates the life of Sonny Ramadhin whose contribution to its civilization and its emergence as an integrated sovereign nation is matched by few and therefore greater than most.

Sir Hilary appointed to Council of United Nations University

The United Nations and its Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO, have appointed Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, Vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies, to the governing Council of the United Nations University. The appointment is for a period of six years beginning May 3, 2022.

The main functions of the Council are to formulate the principles and policies of the university, govern its operations, and consider and approve its biennial budget and work programme.
