The University of the West Indies (The UWI) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Patrick Anglin as the University Data Protection Officer, with effect from August 1, 2021.

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) proudly congratulates Ambassador Dr the Honourable June Soomer on receiving the Order “José de Marcoleta” in the Degree of Grand Cross, which is the highest distinction that the Republic of Nicaragua can convey upon a foreign diplomat.

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Paula Morgan as the new University Director of the Institute for Gender and Development Studies (IGDS). Professor Morgan’s appointment took effect on August 1, 2021, succeeding Professor Opal Palmer Adisa, who held the post since 2017.

The American College of Surgeon’s has accepted Professor Newton Duncan for Membership to its Academy of Master Surgeon Educators.  The mission of the Academy is to play a leadership role in advancing the science and practice of education across all surgical specialties, promoting the highest achievement in the lifetimes of surgeons. 

As the new academic year commences, The University of the West Indies (The UWI) is pleased to announce its six newest Professors, including an Environmental Physicist, Economic and Political Development Specialist and four medical professionals. The six were promoted to the regional university’s highest academic rank with effect from May 2021, following rigorous evaluation of the quality and quantity of their research, publications and other professional activities by internal and external assessors.

The following statement is issued by Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, Vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies, and Chairman of the CARICOM Reparations Commission, in response to the University’s receipt of a US$500,000 reparation payment from UK Philanthropist, Bridget Freeman.

The UWI mourns the passing of Prof Emeritus Gerald Lalor

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) is mourning the passing of another family member, former principal of the Mona Campus and renowned scientist, Professor Emeritus, the Honourable Gerald Cecil Lalor, OM, OJ, CD, who transitioned on Sunday, August 22, 2021.

It was a series about the Atlantic slave trade on the BBC that shocked Bridget Freeman.  Up until then, she knew almost nothing about the plight of free Africans who boarded ships and were taken throughout the world and sold into slavery.

“I was horrified and it touched me and I thought dear God, this is not right” she said.
