UWI 55th Track & Field Championship

New Changes for 2010 version of UWI Sports Day

On March 4th, the 2010 edition of the Intramural Track and Field finals more commonly known as “UWI Sports Day” will see a breath a fresh year as critical changes have been made to increase the standard of delivery of the event.

Chief among the changes is the reduction in the number of days used for the event. For the first time, sports day will be a full one day event and will see the suspension of classes and examinations so as to facilitate the full participation of students and staff. The day will also feature many different forms of entertainment and giveaways as the Sports Department seeks to increase the entertainment value of the event and to provide students and staff with a fun and energetic atmosphere.

This year there will also be new teams as the Sports Department continues to play a pivotal role in the inclusiveness of the Western Jamaica Campus as they will be sending a contingent of students to participate for the first time at the event. The department has also reached out to the commuting students, as in addition to their involvement in the intramural football competition, there will be special invitational races for commuting students to be able to showcase their talents.

With the sports scholarship programme in place and over10 students on track and field scholarships, the 2010 sports day is expected to produce fireworks as a string of top class performances are expected from the athletes. Last year’s winners Taylor Hall will be wary of the fact that last year they won by a very slim margin, and a resurgent Chansea will be in a no nonsense mood this year.  Events to be contested are: 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 3000m (women), 5000m (men), Long Jump, Triple Jump, High Jump, Shot Put, Discus, Javelin, 4x100m relay, 4x400m relay and the sprint medley relay.
