UWI in Community Development

The UWI, Mona recognizes the role that sport can play in enhancing community development and has had a long and significant sporting association with its neighbouring communities, with the communities of August Town, Hermitage and Elletson Flats in particular, sharing and benefitting from this partnership.

The initial link, dating back to the late 1950's, was in football and the relationship has grown to the extent that all the communities use UWI facilities at the Mona Bowl as the venue for home games in football competitions ranging from Major League to the Junior League. The Domestic Corner Leagues games are also played at the Mona Bowl. More recently, the partnership has been extended to include netball and basketball.

The schools in the area have also been a part of this development with both August Town Primary and Hope Valley Experimental Schools using the Mona Bowl for Track and Field, Football and Netball. UWI students play a useful role assisting with equipment and advice, usually through the Halls of Residence and Clubs within the University structure.

The University Township Project

The UWI, Mona will consolidate our efforts in community development through the University Township project. This innovative project will deepen the relationship that UWI, Mona enjoys with its surrounding communities. The programme involves the use of UWI resources to promote educational development, skills training, health and nutrition, community development, culture and sports as well as economic development, violence prevention and crime reduction.
