Mona's 110 metre Hurdler Off To CAC Games

THE 21st staging of the CAC Games will be held in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico from July 17-August 1, 2010. There are 31 participating countries and 39 sporting disciplines. Since the inception of the Games to present Jamaica has a medal count of 277 and the country is ranked seventh out of 31 countries. The UWI Sports Department is proud to have representation at these upcoming games. One UWI Mona student-athlete, Hansle Parchment, was interviewed by the department just two days before his July 21 departure for the games. Hansle Parchment, dubbed the 110 metre hurdles star, matriculated to the UWI in 2009 to continue his track career through a Track & Field Scholarship. Before attending the UWI he attended the Morant Bay High School in St. Thomas for six years before moving on to the famous Kingston College. Parchment noted that his involvement in track and field began when he was only in third form at Morant Bay High. Then, he participated in events like discus and shot put. He started competing in hurdles when he was in fourth form and he even represented his school in the 2006 ISSA/VMBS Boys' Athletic Championships. As a Kingston College student he attended the 2007 staging of the IAAF World Youth Track and Field Championships in Ostrava, the Czech Republic. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify for the 110 metre hurdles finals after he finished fifth in a personal best of 14.13 seconds. Two years later Parchment received a gold medal for his sterling performance in the heptathlon at the ISSA/Grace Kennedy Boys' Athletic Championships. On speaking about his experience at the UWI, Parchment has indicated that so far it has been good. He also admitted that before his matriculation he was not aware of the University's Sports Scholarship Programme. This programme was actually started in the year 2008 as a project under the department's Sports Enhancement Fund (SEP), which was launched in June 2006. Mona is quite lucky to have laid hands on Parchment, whose initial intention had been to migrate othe United States after graduating from Kingston College. While overseas he would attend a tertiary institution there and continue to play sports. However, he would have to sit out of school from September to December before starting school in January 2010. He noted that being heavily involved in sports he humbly said that he makes the effort to manage both. He noted that being heavily involved in sports is something that he has become used to since his high school days. He added that even though he is good at tracks he also does well in his academics. The Block C Taylorite also represented his hall in sporting activities over the last academic year on Sports Day and at the Ring Road marathon held early in the first semester. In a bid to manage his time effectively Parchment is only able to be involved in one other extra-curricular activity- the Environmental Club at Taylor Hall. Having clocked 14.10 seconds in the 110- metre hurdles at the trials for the Central American and Caribbean Games, Parchment is optimistic about his first time participating in the event.
