UWI Pelicans makes top 3 at Intercol Track & Field Championships!!

The UWI Pelicans Track and Field Team competed at the recently concluded 50th staging of the Jamaica Intercollegiate Track and Field Championship which was held at the UWI/Usain Bolt Track from March 25-26,2011. The overall performance of both teams were commendable, the male team ended the two day championship with 160 points falling in third position behind UTECH and GC Foster, the female team also ended in third position with 81 points.


The Pelicans were awarded a number of victories through out the championship. The following athletes received gold medals in their respective events: Darrell Garwood (High Jump), Jo-Wayne Hibbert (1500m), Duece Carter (110m H) and Keisha Walkes (Discuss & Shot Put). The 400m relay quartet of scholarship athletes, Duece Carter, Bryan Jackson, Jason Young and David Dunn along with Brian Jackson, produced a stunning performance in the men's 4x100m by smashing the record set by the then Asafa Powell-led University of Technology to win the event. The quartet produced a time of 39.66 seconds, dipping below the previous record of 39.90 seconds sent in 2002.  


Both  male and female 4x400m relay team were placed 2nd in their finals with times of 3.12.85s and 3.59.10, respectively. Oakley Coke (5000m), Jason Young  (200m) and Hansle Parchment(110m H) copped silver medals in their respective events. 


The men's 1600 Sprint Medley, women's 800m medley, David Dunn (100m), Aldane Dunn (Long Jump) and Shantae Mclean (1500m) were all awarded bronze medals in their individual finals. 


The following athletes are specially mentioned as they contributed to the overall performance of the team; Jelani Bogle (High Jump), Andrene Nelson (400m H, 800m), Lesline Gilzene (100m, 200m), Anna Marie Finegan (Discuss, 400m), Najuma Commisong (3000m), Oshane Harris (Discuss, Javelin), Odane Reid (800m), Ramshia Mckenzie (400m), Roderick Tennant (400m), Joel Bartley (Javelin), Delroy Salmon (Long Jump, Triple Jump), Cosmo Stephens (1500m), Kimberly Slater (Long Jump) and Chanique Cousins (400m).
