The UWI Volleyball club entered the Inaugural staging of the Bahamas Defend Ya Spike International Invitational from May 13th-15th, 2011. Both male and female teams competed against teams from USA, Canada, The Bahamas and a select All Star Caribbean Team.
The females played a blistering semi-finals against Canada and won 2 sets to 1. They then moved on to play a select USA team in the staging of the finals and defeated them 3 sets to 1. The male team showed mettle against the ALL Star Caribbean in the semi-finals and lost 2 sets to one. "Both matches were extremely competitive and entertaining", says one spectator. Long standing team member, Cherine Richards, says that "the UWI Club craves International Competition and as nine time National Club Champions in the Jamaica Volleyball League we played the same teams over and over so we know their style and knows what it takes to simply win. Competitions like these truly test our skills and we are further able to serve as ambassadors for our University."
At the end of the competition, the UWI Volleyball club walked away with the Female Championship title and the males settled for third place overall.
