UWI Sports Leadership Academy 'A Great Success'

The 2nd staging of the UWI Sports Leadership Academy was held from July 19-22, 2011 at The University of the West Indies Mona. A total of 41 male athletes between the ages of 14-16 from varying high schools across Jamaica were housed at A.Z. Preston Hall. The camp sought to motivate the boys to pursue tertiary level education whilst engaging in sporting activities. The boys were engaged in rap sessions with varying UWI personalities such as Mr. Damion Crawford, Lecturer at UWI, Mona and PNP YO President, and Dr. Hillary Hickling, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Management Studies, who both spoke about the importance of males in society and the benefits to be garnered from pursuing tertiary education. Also the concepts of team building, public speaking and leadership were explored. On a more social note, the campers engaged in sporting activities such as football, volleyball and track & field. The boys also undertook a community project which was the renovating of the Shelom Basic School in August Town. This project was well received by the Principal of the school who was grateful and thankful for the work being done.

Director of Sports at The University of the West Indies Mona, Mr. Dalton Myers was impressed with the activities of the camp, and went ahead to announced that the camp will now last for 5 days, and a total of 60 males athletes will be selected to participate. Camp coordinator, Rashid Hall was grateful for this expansion as he feels there is a need to get more youngsters as well as sponsors involved. Mr. Hall also stressed the importance of the Male in society and the role of the University in protecting the youths. Guest Speaker at the closing ceremony ACP Elan Powell, spoke about the negative impact of the youths in society, and was pleased at such a venture being spearheaded by the University of the West Indies Sports Department, geared towards changing the negative stigma attached to youths in society.
