UWI Sports Day and Extravaganza 2012

The University of the West Indies Sports Department in association with the Guild of Students on Thursday March 1 2012 hosted their annual  Intramural Sports day and Extravaganza at the UWI/Usain Bolt Track and was dubbed the biggest event of its kind to date with well over 4000 members of staff, students, alumni, athletes, specially invited guests and members from the surrounding communities .

The UWI Sports Extravaganza an event similar to a sports expo was in its second year running and was a major contributor to the event's success. Representatives from National Associations, Sponsors, UWI Departments, Craft and food vendors were on hand to keep the patrons well entertained, informed and rehydrated and refreshed throughout the day. From rock climbing, information on various sports such as swimming, T-Shirts and accessories to snow cones, sausages, soup and jerk were all on show for the eager patrons to sample and purchase.

Patrons who attended and participated in the days preceding were not only entertained by exciting races and nail biting finishes but were also on hand to witness record breaking events both on the field and the track.

The much anticipated staff race was a showdown between UWI Sports Department and Social Sciences. The Social Sciences team was led by Member of Parliament for East Rural St. Andrew, Comrade Damion Crawford and Dalton Myers, Director of Sports, secured victory for the UWI Sports Department team.

Several records were broken at the UWI/Usain Bolt Track and there were many surprises throughout the day. Intra mural Sports day 2012 ended with a very intense 4x400m relay where AZ Preston star runner Jowayne Hibbert closed the gap on Taylor Hall Brian Jackson eventually overtaking Jackson to take home the win for AZ Preston Hall. Despite AZ Preston Hall valiant effort to accumulate the necessary points, Taylor Hall was too far in the lead to be easily overtaken thus emerging as the victors in both the men and women sections securing their title once again. Rex Nettleford Hall took home the cheerleading competition for the first time in history and the  Extravaganza culminated with a grand Integration Thursday at the Bowl.

We would like to extend appreciation to all members of staff, students, athletes, sponsors and well wishers for making UWI Sports day and Extravaganza 2012 a success.
