UWI makes a run-up to the finals of the Jamaica Cricket Club Junior Cup Championship

After six rounds of intense battle the UWI Pelicans Cricket Team, under the tutelage of former Jamaican
and West Indian Cricketer Robert Samuels, will be heading to the finals of the Jamaica Cricket
Association Junior Cup 2012 this weekend. En route to the finals, the Pelicans had to roll off Melbourne Cricket Club, St. Elizabeth Cricket Club and Kensington Cricket Club. Leading up to the finals also in a two day Semi-finals the Pelicans retired the officers from the Police Cricket Club who were bowled out for 162 in their response to UWI's 276 runs. Mona in their second innings made 99 for the loss of three wickets before the close of play on day two.

Captain Paul 'Skippie' Palmer led his team from the front with his contribution of 43 runs and 38 runs in the first and second innings respectively. Desmond Jones continued to exert his prowess on the pitch when he played a massive 73 runs in the first innings and Sheldon Samuels made his contribution of 32 not out during UWI's second innings.

Coach Samuels is very optimistic in going into the finals. He added: "I am expecting us to do well in terms of winning, I'm feeling very good. It's the first time we have entered the Junior Cup and to have made it to the finals is a good feeling. The boys have been playing well and I expect us to play as a team and hopefully take the cup."

UWI will take on Kingston Cricket Club in the finals scheduled for this Sunday, July 1, 2012 at the UTECH Cricket Grounds.

The UWI Sports Department wishes for the coaching staff and the team all the best and we are hopeful of a victory.
