FMS Social Accountability

Responding Together, Making a Difference

Students, staff, faculty, and alumni supported affected communities after Hurricane Melissa, while also helping peers in need. Organized by the FMS Guild Council, student representatives led a Faculty-wide donation drive, assembling and distributing 203 care packages with food, water, hygiene products, and clothing to families in need. Furthermore, 145 medical students contributed to recovery efforts in Trelawny and Westmoreland in collaboration with national organizations.

Students Impact: Embodying the FMS Ethos of Service

Guided by the ethos of care and outreach that defines the Faculty, students across various groups undertook their own initiatives in response to the hurricane. Some highlights include the Here For You initiative, led by the Mona Medical Students’ Association (MMSA), which provided a needs-based system allowing students to safely indicate personal challenges arising from the hurricane. Through this platform, MMSA facilitated peer support using studentled resources and referred students to the appropriate University departments when additional assistance was required.
