Master and Doctor of Philosophy (Mphil/PhD) in Public Health

 

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree programme is a research-focused programme that equips students to contribute to the maintenance and improvement in public health primarily through public health research and teaching. The programme is intended to develop the research skills of graduate students with particular application to solving public health problems of lower and middle income developing countries. The programme is geared towards honing skills in quantitative and qualitative research methodology, staistical analyses, policy application and health promotion. The programme consists of a minimum of 9 credit hours of coursework, research seminars (MPhil candidates: at least 2 seminars; PhD candidates: at least 3 seminars) and a thesis. MPhil/PhD candidates are also expected to participate in routine journal club meetings and other departmental seminars.

 

Entry Requirments

  • The minimum requirement of the UWI to enrol in a research degree (MPhil/PhD) is an Upper Second Class Honours degree or its equivalent.
  • Post-graduate students with an approved Masters Degree in an appropriate field of study in Public Health may register directly for the PhD programme.
  • All other graduates are required to enrol for the MPhil degree and on successful completion of qualifying courses, request transfer to the PhD programme; however, the transfer may not be requested before completing one year as a MPhil candidate.

 

Each candidate's MPhil/PhD conmtittee jointly determines the programme of study. Research interests should include problems with application to public and population health. Existing areas of departmental research include but are not limited to:

  • Primary Health Care
  • Sexual and Reproductive Health
  • Environmental Health
  • Non-Communicable Diseases
  • Health Management
