Duration of Programme: 2 Semesters (August-December & Janaury-June)

Typical time: 4pm to 7pm with 1 week face-to-face instruction per semester

Mode of Delivery: Both face-to face & online

Credits earned: 24 credits (12 credits per semester)

Overview

The programme is designed to improve the capacity of health and other allied service providers to understand and address the unique needs of adolescents across the Caribbean region. The programme is open to health practitioners, social workers, educators, policy makers, legal and correctional providers and other persons with a vested interest in the well- being of adolescents. The programme focuses on empowering a spirit of advocacy within the student, to inform their decision-making skills and guide their delivery of optimal services to the adolescent, and development of appropriate policies and programs pertaining to adolescents. Some of the key courses include: Public Health and Policy for Caribbean Adolescent Healthcare; Sexuality and Sexual Behaviour in Caribbean Adolescents; Risk and Resiliency - Mental and Emotional Health in Adolescents; Human Rights, Advocacy, Law and the Caribbean Adolescent; and Interventions to Improve Adolescent Health in the Caribbean.

 

Our Programme Aim

To build capacity in the application of adolescent development and health, communication skills and advocacy to optimize the healthcare and systems delivery for adolescents in the Caribbean region and beyond.

 

Programme Delivery

The course will be offered as a blended programme utilizing face-to-face as well as cross-campus on-line distance learning. Didactic presentations, group discussions, use of instructional videos, individual / group presentations and role play activities will be utilized.

 

Criteria for Admission

Applicants to the programme must be graduates of an accredited University, having successfully completed an undergraduate programme in a health-related field or other relevant areas, such as education, legal reform etc. Persons with professional or technical qualification of special relevance to the course and have had at least five (5) years of relevant practical experience may also qualify for admission to the programme and may be required to participate in an interview for this purpose. It is preferable that applicants have a strong academic background to ensure successful completion of the programme.
