The mission of the UWI School of Nursing, Mona, is to lead the Caribbean region in delivering undergraduate and postgraduate evidence-based nursing education which reflects international standards; engaging students and nurses/midwives in scientific and scholarly inquiry and critical thinking; facilitating the transfer of knowledge and skills that foster caring throughout the life cycle and the wellness illness continuum; and promoting excellence in evidence-based practice in nursing/midwifery.
Our vision is that we will be recognized regionally and internationally for providing excellence in nursing education through innovative programmes that are responsive to global health challenges and for generating high quality interdisciplinary and international research.
It is with great pleasure that I bring greetings to the UWISON family and well wishers in the region and indeed, across the world. The UWI School of Nursing, Mona has had to contend with many changes and challenges in the past academic year as we adjust to the changing social and economic climate nationally and regionally. These variables have created opportunities for innovation and expansion of our strategic goals objectives. Additionally, they have strengthened our resolve to retain leadership in the delivery of cutting edge nursing education and training at undergraduate and graduate levels.
The core values of the UWI School of Nursing, Mona (UWISON) are excellence; integrity; caring; mutual respect; loyalty and commitment to the standards of UWI, UWISON, and the nursing /midwifery professions; professionalism; and consistent quality in service and evidence-based practice.
Our unit correctly offers one undergraduate and two postgraduate degrees and they are as follows:
The four-year B.Sc. Nursing programme consisting of 139 credits is offered by The UWI School of Nursing, Mona, over four academic years and three summers (summers commencing in the second year) as a full-time programme only. Completing this programme will make candidates eligible to apply to sit the Regional Examination for Nurse Registration (RENR).
The MScN programme is offered to BScN degree graduates who hold registration or licensure in their current jurisdiction of practice. This programme covers areas such as Nursing Administration, Nursing Education, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Family Nurse Practitioner and Mental Health/Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner.
The purpose of the MPhil/PhD Nursing programme is to meet the educational needs of nurses who are committed to becoming nurse scientists, promoting excellence in scientific and scholarly inquiry and research, engaging in professional leadership, and influencing evidence-based practice.
