A 25-year Association of Rainfall and Temperature Anomalies with Type 1 Diabetes Incidence in Caribbean Children

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2017.145
Synopsis:
This study identified an epidemic increase of Type 1 diabetes cases in 2006-2007 among children in the US Virgin Islands. From 1980 to 2005, Type 1 diabetes epidemics occurred in children when above normal rainfall combined with below normal temperature.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To determine if rainfall and temperature anomalies are associated with epidemics of Type 1 diabetes among children in the US Virgin Islands.

Medical Laboratory Preparedness and Knowledge, Attitude and Practices of Lab Staffs towards Vector Borne Diseases Outbreak in Guyana

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2017.116
Synopsis:
Laboratories in Guyana are not prepared for possible vector-borne disease outbreaks. This was largely due to lack of information, guidelines, and tools to facilitate an effective process. Therefore, an effort is required in collaboration with Ministry of Health and laboratories that should derive strategic ways to prepare laboratories.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To determine the level of preparedness among selected laboratories in Georgetown, Guyana to a possible vector-borne disease outbreak and to determine the level of knowledge, attitudes, and practices of laboratory personnel towards climate change and vector-borne disease.

The Efficacy of Needle-pricking Therapy and Rotating-pulling Manipulation on Vertebral Artery Cervical Spondylosis

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2017.100
Synopsis:
This randomized controlled study compared the effects of needle-pricking therapy and rotating-pulling manipulation on blood velocity, angiokinesis, and blood viscosity in patients with vertebral artery cervical spondylosis. The authors conclude that needle-pricking therapy in combination with rotating-pulling manipulation may be more effective in adjustment of the spine position and balance, local tissue, and system than rotating-pulling manipulation alone.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To compare, through randomized controlled trials of large samples of patients, the effects and mechanisms of needle-pricking therapy and rotating-pulling manipulation on blood velocity, angiokinesis, and blood viscosity in patients with vertebral artery cervical spondylosis.

Relationship between Clinical Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Symptoms and Indexes of Blood, Renal Function, Liver Function and Immunology

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2017.148
Synopsis:
To study the relationships between clinical SLE symptoms and indexes of blood, renal function, liver function and immunology. The present study indicated that some biochemical, including RBC, Hb, BUN, albuminuria and cylindruria, liver damage, AST, TG, SSA, AnuA and u1RNP, are closely to the prognosis of SLE, and it’s important to control these biochemical indexes during the treatment period.

ABSTRACT

Objective: This paper aimed to study the relationships between clinical systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) symptoms and indexes of blood, renal function, liver function and immunology.

Agreement, Time and Cost Comparison for the Identification of Gram Negative Bacteria Isolates Using VITEK® 2 Compact, VITEK® 60, VITEK® Mass Spectrometry and API® 20E/NE

DOI:
10.7727/wimj.2017.139
Synopsis:
This study looked at the agreement between Vitek®2 Compact (VTC), VITEK®2 60 (VT60), API® 20E/20NE (API) and VITEK® MS (VMS) bacteria identification systems (ID). It also examined the time and cost for the relevant bacterial ID systems and the resolution of discrepancies which arose as a result of using the different systems, mainly in Canada but also with reference to the Vitek®2 Compact (VTC) in Mona, Jamaica.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: We aimed to compare systems in respect of 1) the agreement between VITEK®2 Compact, VITEK®2 60, VITEK® Mass Spectrometry systems and API®20E/NE for species identification, 2) the time to identification of organisms and 3) the cost of identification and susceptibility testing of each organism.
