Age was a risk factor in the development of periodontal infections with gingivitis occurring in early age while periodontitis was prevalent in adults. Polybacterial aetiology was common to both conditions with anaerobic predominance in periodontitis.

Objectives: The dynamic nature of oro-facial infections made it imperative to study the epidemiology of gingivitis and periodontitis which are significant clinical conditions in the Nigerian environment.

Periodontal Disease Severity and Systemic Diseases Prevalent in a Caribbean Catchment Area of Patients

Synopsis: 
Patients attending King’s College London, United Kingdom, were screened for periodontal disease and co-existing cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, arthritis and a smoking habit. A significant proportion of patients with severe periodontal disease had coexisting systemic disease and were smokers.
