During December 2020, the Candice S Charlton Foundation (CSC) handed over a bursary to the Department of Physics to help gifted, needy undergraduate students particularly during this COVID year. What’s extra special about this gift is that the foundation’s director is still a graduate student pursuing her PhD in Applied Physics. The Faculty applauds this powerful example of giving it back.

Ms Charlton is a humble, hardworking graduate student who remembers her own financial struggles as an undergraduate physics student. She has decided that she does not need to wait to acquire great wealth to make a difference in the life of even one student.  She had previously founded the Candice S Charlton Foundation (CSC Foundation) which is a Christ-centred organisation born from her own past financial struggles and passion for volunteerism. The Foundation’s mandate and focus is offering leadership development seminars and bursaries to youth at their different education levels. Since its inception the foundation has adopted the Hope United Church of God Sunday School Department providing bursaries and stationery supplies to the students. In response to a call  from the Department to staff and alumni requesting assistance for students in this particularly challenging year, the still young CSC Foundation decided to offer a bursary. The Candice S. Charlton Bursary will be awarded in the new calendar year.
