Dr. Daren Watson, a proud graduate of FST, received a Prime Minister’s National Youth Award for Excellence in Academics on December 13, 2020. This Prime Minister’s Awards are the highest honor bestowed upon Jamaican youth who have achieved eminent national and international distinction in a specified area.
Dr. Watson entered the Faculty of Science and Technology, The University of the West Indies, Mona in 2010. He pursued a BSc. in Environmental Physics and Mathematics (Double Major) graduating with First Class Honors in 2013. He immediately went on to pursue an MPhil in Physics focused on the development of an open-source software for the design and optimization of hybrid renewable energy systems across Jamaica. During his tenure at the University of the West Indies, Dr. Watson was the recipient of several Departmental, Faculty, and University awards.
In 2017, he was awarded the Fulbright Graduate Scholarship to pursue graduate studies at the University of Central Florida (UCF). His penchant for knowledge and academic excellence was noteworthy as he satisfied the requirements for his MSc. in Mechanical Engineering in December 2019, and then defended his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering in October 2020. His dissertation focused on the modulation of flow separation around spherical projectiles using interfacial properties. Dr. Watson is now a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Fluids and Structures Laboratory at UCF. Daren is passionate about his country and sees himself contributing to its development in the near future.
