Dr. Donna Minott Kates - new Head of Chemistry

The Faculty of Science and Technology welcomes Dr. Donna Minott Kates as the new Head of the Department of Chemistry. She takes over from Dr. Roy Porter who demits office after two successive terms. Dr. Minott Kates is currently a Senior Lecturer whose research specialization is the characterisation of food and foodstuffs that have a uniquely Jamaican identity.  Among her research projects are the tracking of  hypoglycin variation in ackees during maturation, across varieties and over seasons, and investigating the chemistry of Jamaican spices and essential oils. She was instrumental in the establishment of the MSc in Food and Agro-Processing Technologies and since 1995 has coordinated the highly successful Better Process Control School (BPCS) for the Caribbean. The UWI-BPCS has the distinction of being the first non-US offering to be accorded certifying privileges for the BPCS.  Dr. Minott Kates is a highly regarded lecturer and has graduated several postgraduate students. In addition to all this, she has served on a number of local regulatory bodies and has given invaluable service to the University through the West Indies Group of University Teachers (Jamaica). FST welcomes her in her new capacity.
