FST Alum awarded Fulbright Scholarship

O’Dane McKoy, a graduate from the Department of Geography and Geology at the Faculty of Science and Technology at The University of the West Indies, Mona, is named among the 2024 Fulbright Scholars. He will be pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree at the University of North Dakota. O’Dane emphasizes his goal of reshaping perceptions of geology and mining in Jamaica. Recognizing that geology is often overlooked, McKoy is passionate about highlighting the industry's significance, especially given its controversial reputation due to environmental concerns. He aims to promote a more positive understanding of the mining sector upon his return, demonstrating its vital role in Jamaica’s development. This opportunity, made possible by the Fulbright scholarship, not only allows him to advance academically but also to contribute meaningfully to discussions around sustainable practices in mining.

The Faculty congratulates O’Dane on his achievement and wishes him all the best.
