FST congratulates Charles Grant on his Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence

The Faculty of Science and Technology congratulates Mr. Charles Grant, Director General of the International centre for Environmental and Nuclear Science (ICENS) on recently being named a Vice Chancellor’s Awardee for Outstanding contribution to Public Service. Charles has been an outstanding leader in the engagement of atomic energy for development in the Caribbean and beyond. In Jamaica he has been instrumental in Jamaica’s adherence to international nuclear obligations including concluding steps in the formation of the regulatory framework for nuclear and radiation use in Jamaica, and core conversion from a high to low enriched uranium source (which eliminated the security risk of the UWI reactor). In the wider Caribbean Charles has led numerous expert mission supported by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to assist Caribbean and Latin American states develop their ‘Country Programme Frameworks’ for funding by the IAEA. He has a passionate desire to see atomic energy used to positively impact agriculture through development of new crop varieties, health via wide use of radiation in diagnosis and treatment of cancer or water resources development through use of isotopes to track water movement in soils. Under Charles leadership ICENS has cemented its role as the leading nuclear institution in the English speaking Caribbean. 

The Faculty salutes Charles Grant and the other 2020 winners on their achievement. The awards will be presented at a formal ceremony later this year.

About the Award: The Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence recognizes outstanding achievements by UWI Academic and Senior Administrative and Professional staff members in the areas of Teaching, Research, Service to the University Community, Contribution to Public Service, and All-round Excellence in a combination of two or more of the areas. There are also awards to Departments in the area of quality assurance excellence and to projects that demonstrate excellence in Multi-Campus Research Collaboration (the One UWI Award) and in International Collaboration (the Globalisation Award).
