FST GEO-GEO team explores fossilized coral reefs at Treasure Beach

On April 15, 2023, a field trip to Treasure Beach, St. Elizabeth, was led by Matthew Rahamut, a graduate student, and his supervisor Dr. Thomas Stemann from the Department of Geography and Geology (GEO-GEO), Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) at The UWI Mona. The purpose of the trip was to explore the fossilized emergent coral reefs along the route from Great Bay to Billy's Bay. These reefs date back approximately 125,000 years to the last interglacial period when the sea level was 6 meters higher than it is today. By studying these ancient formations, the group gained valuable insights into the long-term accretion processes of coral reefs.

The field trip provided participants, including professional geologists, lecturers, and undergraduate students, with additional hands-on experience of conducting field work and reconstructing past environments using geological methods. The event was organized by the Geological Society of Jamaica, and the Treasure Beach Turtle Group played a crucial role in granting access to the sites. Their assistance is greatly appreciated.
