FST Student Experience | Tour of Appleton Estate

On Saturday, October 15, 2022, twelve (12) students and two (2) lecturers from the Faculty of Science and Technology travelled to Appleton Estate in Siloah, St. Elizabeth as invited guests of Dr. Joy Spence (FST Alum and the world’s first female master blender). Students and lecturers were bused from the campus and treated to a tour of the estate, lunch and rum tasting. An all-day event but nonetheless an enjoyable one with insight into the history of the estate, the fermentation of sugar cane molasses to produce our Jamaican rum as well as the distillation and aging processes. The beautiful property was a sight to behold and the talk of daily afternoon rains on the property were notably true during the visit. Overall, a wonderful time spent, and much gratitude is extended to Dr. Spence and her team for facilitating the visit.

The twelve (12) students were Rochele Webster, Rhay Lee Waldron, Aaliyah Reid, Alexia Brooks Brittoney McKenzie, Kimoy Grant, Mpule Clarke, Javaughn Anderson Gabrielle Johnson, Jeneil Haynes, Akira Campbell and Catherine Lloyd.
