FST Students and Staff Come Out for Summer Seminars

The last two Thursdays (June 27 and July 4) saw the faculty hosting talks led by external Associate Professors, Dr. Adelina Voutchkova and Dr. Jay Mathews which were both well received by students and staff alike.

Dr. Voutchkova's talk on Green Chemistry touched on the chemical industry which provides us with products that enhance our quality of life. She zoned in on the current and future effects of chemical processes on the environment made evident by climate change, toxic effects of commercial chemicals used in products, and the diminishing supply of clean drinking water, among many others. Green chemistry aims to help with identifying solutions tailored to the availability of local resources while minimizing waste and avoiding use of precious metals among other sustainable and environmentally sound methods.

Dr. Mathew's presentation, which was preceded by a technical talk with members of the Department of Physics, was based on Optics and Photonics. He shared on how both have played a crucial role in the development of technology, enabling new devices and functionalities that have changed our daily lives and shaped the world we live in.  The existence of fibre optics was discussed and its effect on the the internet and its reach via long distance lines between continents and countries which has led to a globalized economy that has changed how the world does business. Overall, attendees were able to see the role of optics in our daily lives personally and professionally in addition to its large scale impact world wide.
