FST-UWI Mona among key partners for CCREE Flagship EV Expo

Caribbean Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (CCREEE) in partnership with The University of the West Indies (Department of Physics, Faculty of Science and Technology), International Development Bank, CARICOM Energy, Ministry of Transport and Mining, Jamaica Public Service Company, and Flash Motors hosted the “Regional EV-Lution III” on November 25, 2022 on the Mona Campus under the theme “Our Transportation Future is Electric”.

The Expo, which is the third Electric Vehicle  (EV) roadshow for CCREE (previous two held in Barbados) was a public and private sector partnership aimed to increase public knowledge and understanding of EV technologies and their cost benefits, including their potential role in the sustainable energy future for the region. The Expo provided an opportunity for targeted stakeholders, as well as UWI staff, students and participants from the general public, to interact directly, through test driving and other hands on activities.

The University commissioned a charging station that was donated and installed by Flash Motors and is available for use by students and staff. The charging station is one of the most modern models and is fully electrical with capabilities for data extraction to be used for teaching, research and monitoring, primarily by the Department of Physics and the Faculty of Engineering.

A University session was facilitated and chaired by Prof. Tannecia Stephenson (Deputy Dean, Faculty of Science and Technology) and included presentations from university representatives including Dr. Louis-Ray Harris (Lecturer, Department of Physics); Mr. Santana Lewis (postgraduate student), Mr. Paul-Junior Brown and Mr. Lorenzo Lewin (undergraduate students) who are supervised by Dr. Randy Koon Koon (Lecturer, Department of Physics).

Exhibitors at the Expo were: Evergo Jamaica, Tropical Mobility / Tropical Renewable Energy, EV Owners Association, The UWI Mona, Island Traffic Authority - Road Safety Unit, JPS Co, Stewarts Automotive Group, Flash Motors, ATL Motors and Automotive.

Ms. Cherri-Ann Farquharson, FST Alum and Capacity Development and Gender Expert at CCREE, Prof. T. Stephenson and Dr. R. Koon Koon served as members of the Planning Committee and were integral in the execution of the day’s activities.
