Roxanne Francis (research student and special instructor), Department of Mathematics) participated in an international workshop on Non-Linear Stability of Thermoconvective Flows in Bangalore, India from January 9-14, 2023. The workshop was held on the grounds of Christ (Deemed to be University) and organized by the Center for Mathematical Needs. Participants hailed from India, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Chile, and Jamaica. The workshop featured daily interactive sessions covering fundamental concepts of fluid flow and stability, while also allowing for cultural exchange. Roxanne's participation was supported by a Research & Publications grant awarded by the Office of Graduate Studies and Research, The UWI Mona. “I’ve always admired India for its culture of excellence in academia, especially in STEM disciplines.  My recent visit there completely solidified my perception.  My expectations were superbly exceeded as I was able to be taught by researchers who have contributed pioneering work to the space of fluid dynamics and thermoconvective instabilities, such as Prof. P G Siddheshawar. He, among all the others, communicated so well the fundamental ideas underpinning fluid motion, and their personal passions for the discipline, which sparked an even greater passion in me to pursue further research in that area. Each engagement increased my knowledge, understanding and potential, which has boosted my confidence in said research.  I now know more, and have a better understanding of the work that I rely on, that they themselves have published. I have even more respect for their drive for excellence. I have made fruitful collaborations which will make my research career that more special. What was even more beautiful was the level of hospitality meted out to me by everyone! I felt at home, respected, and celebrated, as I too had the opportunity to share about my research endeavors and my sentiments about the entire experience. India was phenomenal! I certainly have plans of returning,” noted Roxanne.
