Congratulations to Senior Lecturers, Dr. Marvadeen Singh-Wilmot (Department of Chemistry), and Dr. Nagarani Ponakala (Department of Mathematics) from the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), The University of the West Indies, Mona (The UWI Mona) on their appointment as Fellows of the Caribbean Academy of Sciences (CAS). Their achievement is particularly significant as it not only adds to the growing number of female CAS Fellows (now five) but also underscores the crucial role of women in STEM fields.
Nominated by Professors Emeriti Robert Lancashire and Paul Reese, the announcement took place during the Biennial CAS Conference in Trinidad on November 25, 2023.
Today, December 14, 2023, both scientists were further acknowledged in their new role at a handover ceremony held in the Dean's Office, FST. Their certificates were presented by Professor Anthony Clayton (current CAS Fellow). Also in attendance were Dr. Donna Minott Kates, Head, Department of Chemistry, Dr. Dwight Robinson, former Head, Department of Life Sciences and a member of the CAS Jamaica Board, and Prof. Tannecia Stephenson, Deputy Dean, FST, The UWI Mona.
The Caribbean Academy of Sciences represents the Caribbean region on international scientific bodies and has joint agreements with other academies and academic institutions.
