Jamaica Gleaner | Overview of 2021 Jamaican Mathematical Olympiad

The Jamaican Mathematical Olympiad faced new challenges in 2021. Jamaican schools operated in new modes, schedules shifted unpredictably, and face-to-face encounters were sharply curtailed. Even so, The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, through the Department of Mathematics, successfully completed its programmes in all three divisions. These are the Senior Olympiad, the Junior Olympiad, and the International Division.

This year, the Senior Mathematical Olympiad comprised three rounds. It began on March 21 and ended on June 26. A total of 737 students from 18 schools entered the competition. The Junior Olympiad also comprised three rounds. It began on April 15 and ended on June 25. A total of 2456 students from 68 schools entered the competition.

In The International Division, Jamaica competed in two Olympiads, the Central American and Caribbean Mathematical Olympiad (CENTRO) and the Iberoamerican Mathematical Olympiad (OIM). In the CENTRO, Aayush Jain of Ardenne High won a Bronze Medal, earning Jamaica’s first international medal since 2016. In the OIM, Jaheim Harris of St. Jago High won an Honourable Mention for the second year in a row.
