Mathematics Department Hosts Successful 13th Annual Career Fair Following Post-Hurricane Rescheduling

The Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science and Technology, The University of the West Indies, Mona successfully staged its 13th Annual Career Fair on Thursday, March 12, 2026, after the event was postponed due to the impact of Hurricane Melissa. Originally scheduled for November 2025, the delay allowed both students and participating organisations the necessary time to recover and re-engage.

The rescheduled event brought together Level 2 and Level 3 mathematics students for a day of professional engagement and career exploration. In preparation for the fair, the department also hosted a Soft Skills Seminar on February 27, 2026. The session, led by Ms Nadia Viero, Senior Human Resource Assistant in the Training and Development Unit at The UWI, Mona Campus, focused on equipping students with essential workplace competencies. Participants described the session as highly interactive and valuable.
The Career Fair featured an opening ceremony followed by a dynamic breakout session, where students had the opportunity to interact directly with representatives from eleven leading organisations. Participating companies included First Global Bank, Jamaica Biscuit Company, the Statistical Institute of Jamaica, Jamaica Public Service (JPS), National Commercial Bank (NCB), Financial Services Commission (FSC), Guardian Life, Scotiabank, the Tax Administration of Jamaica, the Ministry of Education, Skills, Youth and Information, and GraceKennedy Limited.

The day’s proceedings ran smoothly and according to schedule, fostering meaningful connections between students and potential employers. At the conclusion of the event, both students and company representatives were invited to provide feedback via a digital survey. The Career Fair received high satisfaction ratings, averaging 4.5 out of 5 from students and 4.6 from participating organisations, reflecting the overall success and impact of the initiative.

In appreciation of their involvement, the department presented each representative with branded gift items. Notably, the event also yielded tangible outcomes, with several students being shortlisted for interviews with participating companies.

The Department of Mathematics continues to demonstrate its commitment to student development by creating platforms that bridge academic learning with real-world career opportunities.
