Gavin Campbell is a recent graduate of the Department of Life Sciences, Faculty of Science and Technology at The UWI, Mona, having successfully completed his PhD in Environmental Biology which was awarded in August 2024. Gavin has had a great interest in education and the Sciences from a young age, with a particular fascination with insects. Upon being introduced to the world of aquatic insects, Gavin undertook the task of studying those insects which are underrepresented in the public eye.
For his PhD thesis entitled “The Ecology of a Suburban Aquatic-Terrestrial Ecosystem”, Gavin focused on the changes which occur in insect communities in response to flooding and drying in a temporary pond. His work also included the use of aquatic insects to reduce mosquito populations in urban environments (biological control). He was supervised by Dr. Eric Hyslop and Dr. Tannice Hall.
He looks forward to even greater representation of freshwater and terrestrial insect communities, particularly in urban areas, identifying the ways in which the human and insect worlds interact and benefit each other. Having been empowered by his experience in the scientific field, he finds himself brilliantly equipped to excel in numerous fields.
