FST Researchers Participate in Climate Data Science Workshop

A team of researchers from the Department of Geography and Geology, Faculty of Science and Technology, The University of the West Indies, Mona, recently participated in a three-day climate data science workshop titled “Data-Driven Advocacy for Climate Change Action: Workshop for Civil Society Organizations and Other Data Users.” The event was held at Hotel Four Seasons, Jamaica, from February 25-27, 2025, and was organized by the Jamaica Environment Trust (JET) in collaboration with PARIS21.

Representing UWI Mona at the workshop were Dr. Arpita Mandal (Senior Lecturer), Dr. Jason Tambie (Lecturer), and Ms. Kellysia Williams (Graduate Student). Their participation was particularly relevant, as their research addresses various aspects of climate change mitigation. With Jamaica being highly vulnerable to climate change—experiencing more intense hurricanes, prolonged droughts, and unpredictable rainfall patterns—there is an urgent need for data-driven approaches to inform climate action.

The workshop sought to enhance the capacity of civil society organizations (CSOs) and other stakeholders to effectively use climate data for advocacy. Participants explored ways to leverage existing data to drive climate action, fostered collaboration between CSOs and national statistical agencies, and developed skills in data storytelling to strengthen evidence-based decision-making.

By engaging in this initiative, UWI Mona researchers contributed to the broader effort of enhancing climate resilience in Jamaica and the wider Caribbean. Their involvement underscores the importance of integrating research with advocacy to address the pressing climate challenges facing the region.
